King can rule the Friday night roost at Romford

KNOCKBROGAN KING, comfortably fastest in the heats last week and with a terrific make-up to boot, is very hard to get away from in the final of the Romford Friday Night 500 Standard over 400m at 9.24 (live on Racing Post Greyhound TV).

Jason Heath’s dog has won four in a row since a British debut defeat over the course and distance in February and looked a class act seven days ago, particularly the way he opened up from the front along the back stretch.

All of his rivals are more than capable performers at this level, but time may tell that he is a cut above this sort of contest and, set for a great run out wide early as the sole wide seed, he can turn close to the action at worst before unleashing that two-to-three burst again to settle the issue.

Six middle-seeded runners means the other final on the card, the Romford Friday Night 500 Maiden over 400m (9.06) has a strange look to it and a strange result is not beyond the realms of possibility.

It is anyone’s guess how the run to the bend will pan out with a number of greyhounds going from very unfamiliar berths, but it would not be the biggest surprise in the world were likely outsider River Blitz to go round in front.

He showed good speed to the turn against Bubbly Turbo in the fastest of last week’s heats and similar spark would serve him well in a contest where trouble in behind is a distinct possibility and could see him left with quite an advantage.

Kakantu’s most recent 575m appearance at Romford saw him short-headed by Fivestar Clipper in February. With Kevin Boon’s versatile dog also boasting wins over Mossvale Ace and Bubbly Gold here, he looks a viable alternative to the more obvious Millwards Master in the opening heat of the Tony Williams Dual Distance Trophy over 575m at 9.40.

Heat two at 9.56 also sees Boon with a strong hand, and his Knockbawn Caviar gets a narrow vote over kennelmate Farley Rio on the basis of recent consistency – both should make it safely through to next week’s 750m decider.

Fivestar Clipper suffered a shock reverse last week but normal service can be resumed for Derek Knight’s star in the 575m finale at 10.40.

Flanked by Sportsmans Jojo and Droopys Scion, though, a better start than he made seven days ago would be prudent.

Two heats of a ‘winner of one’ event over 400m are best left to Paul Young’s exciting prospect Underground Blue (8.18) and Frank Gray’s Droopys Messina (8.34), while other Romford one-off picks are John Mullins’ Droopys Southboy (8.02) plus the Young duo of Blakefield Nites (10.11) and Swabys Valerie (10.26).

Maiden fancies on the card are John Mullins’ Glenrock Jayfkay (7.31), Jason Heath’s Alien Sleeper (7.47) and Paul Young’s Young Jet (8.50).
