Draw made for Saturday's Derby final....Derby final draw (and Star Sports betting): 1 Magical Bale 6-4 2 Ballymac Tas 12 3 Priceless Blake 10 4 Skywalker Logan 9-2 5 Droopys Expert 7 6 Clonbrien Prince 5-2 (from initial 11-4) KEVIN HUTTON on Sunday night announced that Dorotas Wildcat, the 2018 Derby champion and subsequently crowned Greyhound of the Year, has been retired, writes Jonathan Kay.
The May 2015 veteran's title defence ended at Nottingham on Saturday when he tired late on into fourth behind kennelmate Magical Bale in the opening semi-final and Hutton tweeted: “A torn whip muscle has bought the end to the racing career of our superstar Dorotas Wildcat.
“2017 Derby Plate, 2017 Select Stakes, 2018 English Derby, 2018 Eclipse, 2018 GOTY. You have made so many dreams come true for ourselves & David Usher.”
On Monday morning, Nottingham tweeted: "The People’s Champion Dorotas Wildcat will lead out the parade for the Final of The Star Sports, Arc & LPS English Greyhound Derby 2019 on Saturday."
Six unseeded runners went into the drum. Four are Irish-trained.
Pre draw Betting: 6-5 (from 6-4) Magical Bale, 5-2 Clonbrien Prince, 5 (from 9-2) Skywalker Logan, 7 (from 5) Droopys Expert, 14 (from 8) Priceless Blake, 16 Ballymac Tas
Saturday's analysis
1st Derby semi 1 Magical Bale trap 2 29.42sec 4.93sec sectional 2 Droopys Expert trap 1 five lengths 5.05sec 3 Priceless Blake trap 5 threequarters 5.15sec
Magical Bale flew out and made all, scoring by five lengths. His kennelmate and the defending champion Dorotas Wildcat turned second and team Hutton seemed booked for the forecast until the Wildcat suddenly began to tire, allowing Angela Harrison's Droopys Expert through to be runner-up, having kept middle, with Ireland's Priceless Blake battling on for the vital third place, getting there by threequarters of a length. Priceless Blake had walked out, turned sharp left from trap five and actually clipped the inside rail going up to the bend. He was given an opportunity when Ballyanne Sim and King Sheeran collided on the second, ending both their chances. Priceless Blake took it.
The Wildcat on Sunday night was announced to have come off lame and is to be retired.
2nd semi 1 Clonbrien Prince trap 3 29.40sec 4.94sec sectional 2 Skywalker Logan trap 1 head 5.03sec 3 Ballymac Tas trap 5 four and a quarter 5.11sec
An Irish 1-2-3 with a fourth compatriot, Jaytee Taylor, only missing out in fourth by threequarters.
Graham Holland’s Clonbrien Prince pinged and although Skywalker Logan threatened off the last bend, just failed by a head to get there. Ballymac Tas plugged on for third to be the competition’s best bitch. Queen Beyonce, her main rival for that title, was clobbered at the first with Roxholme Glory, with Jaytee Taylor also taking a bump after walking out. Queen Beyonce was later reported as walking lame.
More to follow later, plus Jim Cremin's blog.
