TRICKYS DUMBO (3-1) maintained his unbeaten British record with a superb front-running performance in the RPGTV Select Stakes over 500m at Nottingham, writes Jonathan Kay of the Racing Post..
Robert Holt’s dog was soon in command after breaking well from three, clocking a 4.94sec sectional, and was clear from the first bend where favourite Droopys Verve took a tumble after being nudged by Ice On Fire.
Up front, Trickys Dumbo pulled further and further clear, eventually scoring by more than seven lengths from Irish raider Ballymac Tas, who just pipped Ice On Fire, in a very smart 29.39sec.
Holt said afterwards: “He’s done everything we could have asked, he’s come away and got clear of the trouble.
“That was his last race as a pup and is all-aged now but he’s shown we can go where we want with him.”
There was an encouraging update from trainer Angela Harrison regarding Droopys Verve after he had been examined by the track vet.
“He seems absolutely fine,” she said, “but we’ll scan him thoroughly in the morning just to be sure.”
The Select had been unfortunately reduced to five runners when transport problems led to the non-arrival of Julie Bateson’s Forest Jason leaving trap five vacant.
“Julie broke down near Knutsford,” explained Nottingham director Nathan Corden.
“We looked at every possible way to get her here but all agreed it wouldn’t be fair on the dog as he’d been sat around for a couple of hours.”
There was a thrilling conclusion to the meeting when Salacres Punch and Troy Bella produced a near identical repeat of their thrilling Derby night sprint tussle over 305m.
Troy Bella prevailed by the shortest of short-heads on that occasion but, despite leading once again, it was roles reversed this time with Pete Harnden’s Salacres Punch nailing him on the line to score by the minimum margin in 17.71sec.
Waikiki Lad (10-1) got first run on heavily-supported odds-on favourite Roxholme Dolly to land a 500m puppy open for Phil Simmonds.
He was paraded by Simmonds’ assistant Nathan Hunt, who had talked up the youngster’s chances when guesting on RPGTV on Friday, and took command from the first bend where there was general bunching in behind.
Roxholme Dolly did really kick into top gear from the third bend but the line always looked like coming in time for Waikiki Lad who held on by three-parts of a length in 29.85sec.
A subsequent division went more to the form book with Angela Harrison’s Droopys Carat (4-7F) just clearing a luckless Bower Jack and then repelling Jet Stream Socks by three-quarters in 29.97sec.
Honour Turbo made it 13 wins in 25 Nottingham starts when forcing his way to the front at the first bend, Adrian McPherson’s dog going on to beat Beluga Boy by three and a half lengths in 30.10sec.
There was further local success in the shape of a double for Lynn Cook courtesy of Wokeen (17.78sec) over 305m and Plaza Lep (28.72sec) over 480m.
Jon Blencowe’s Tellhersomething dominated throughout to reverse Derby final night course and distance form with Droopys Essie in a 730m contest.

A lot of people are talking up the chances of HOVE running the Greyhound Derby in 2020.
Plus for some reason there has been a lot of talk about Towcester starting up again but only for 2 months every year?
I can't see that one myself.
Central Park, Sittingbourne looks the one in the running according to the boys down South.
