SPARTA MASTER produced a stunning run to take heat five of the opening round of the Coral Essex Vase over 575m at Romford on Friday, writes Paul Brown of the Racing Post.....
Sharon Thompson's dog bounced out from trap four and simply put his rivals to the sword as he won without seeing a rival in a new track record of 34.59sec, taking three spots off the mark set by Quantum Leap in August. The in-form Henlow winner had five and a half lengths to spare over Ballymac Osby.
Roxholme Jim again put his early speed to decisive effect to take the final eliminator and underline why he is ante-post favourite.
Uneasy in the market, he initially looked in trouble after King Lennon broke quickly from trap five. However, Hayley Keightley's dog paced up to the opening bend and brushed his rival aside. He duly stretched away and, although again coming back to his field in the closing stages, won comfortably by more than three lengths in 34.92sec
Other heat winners were King Dylan (35.11sec), Alien Sea (35.27sec), Desperado Dan (35.23sec) and Burgess Paradise (35.30sec)

PERRYS CHOICE sprang a 12-1 surprise but deserved success in the opening semi-final of the Coral Essex Vase at Romford on Friday, writes Paul Brown of the Racing Post......
Michelle Brown's dog pinged out from trap one and then fended off ante-post favourite Roxholme Jim as Hayley Keightley's dog showed his familiar early pace. However, he was unable to get past the leader and went out of the competition as his stamina ran out in the closing stages.
Perrys Choice was certainly not stopping, though, and crossed the line in 34.96sec for the 575m, easily his quickest effort over the six-bend trip.
There was also a turn-up in the second semi, with Ernie Gaskin’s 8-1 shot Droopys Aoife fending off new record-holder Sparta Master by the minimum distance in 35.25sec.
Liz McNair landed a one-two in the final eliminator with King Lennon (9-4) accounting for litter-brother King Dylan (5-4F) by nearly five lengths in 34.99sec, although backers of the beaten favourite will wonder what might have been as he was all but clear at the opening bend when tangling with Newinn Cracker.

Droopys Aoife Essex Vase The scene after Droopys Aoife's Coral Essex Vase triumph DROOPYS AOIFE justified trainer Ernie Gaskin's pre-race confidence as she claimed the Coral Essex Vase final over 575m at Romford on Friday but it was a night of drama with track record holder Sparta Master an absentee, writes Jonathan Kay of the Racing Post.
He was caught in serious traffic problems en route and arrived at the track having just missed the deadline of being kennelled a minimum of 45 minutes before the race. Trap four was left vacant.
When the contest started, Shotgun Bullet showed briefly in front out of the traps but Droopys Aoife swiftly passed him and was left with a tidy advantage when Perrys Choice moved off and caused trouble at the first turn.
King Dylan was left second and looked menacing throughout but could never quite get to Droopys Aofie who went on to claim the £10,000 prize by a length in 35.08sec with King Lennon, knocked to last at the first bend, staying on in third another two lengths away.
“You don't like to sound too confident beforehand but I was when she got trap one,” said Gaskin afterwards, “the bookies got it completely wrong.
“I fancy coming back for the Coronation Cup with her if she can handle her brother, Roman Empire, who might be a bit tasty.”
For Sparta Master's trainer Sharon Thompson there was only despair: “We left the kennels at 3.30pm,” she said, “but the M25 was a disaster, I think a crane had fallen over something.
“We tried to dodge it down the M11 but missed the deadline for kennelling by five minutes.”
The Mitch Millward Marathon final over 750m was effectively over as a contest from the first of its eight bends when Patrick Janssens' 6-4 favourite Skilful Sandie went round in front.
Avastorm, who had stolen a march on her in the heats, gave valiant chase for much of the journey but it was always going to be a fruitless task and Skilful Sandie drew away to score by almost five lengths in 46.44sec with the winner's kennelmate Goldies Hotspur third.
Janssens' kennelhand Ria Tillett said: “You've got to give it up to Goldies Hotspur, wherever she is she always tries, but this bitch [Skilful Sandie] is just unbelievable.
“The key thing for her was to make that bend in front and once she did there was no stopping her.”
Bubbly Cain made full use of a great draw in one as the sole railer as he landed some hefty bets in a 400m final.
Paul Young's dog was only moderately away but enjoyed a smooth run on the inside to the first bend, riding a bump to go on at that point and seeing off Signature Callum by three lengths in 24.03sec.
Mark Wallis's Far Froman Angel (24.34sec) and Kevin Hutton's Ballymac Camdon (35.55sec) were respectively quickest in the heats of maiden competitions over 400m and 575m.
