Mark Bird: racing to be suspended or cancelled at 34CGreyhound Board's new hot weather policy set to intervene..BY JONATHAN KAY OF THE RACING POST TUESDAY 23/7/19:GREYHOUND meetings face being called off under the GBGB's new hot weather policy which is set to get its first use with temperatures set to hit record levels in the coming days.
At last weekβs GBGB board meeting, a change was supported by moving what was former hot weather advice to a new hot weather policy which details what trainers and tracks should be considering during instances of hot weather.
GBGB managing director Mark Bird said: βWe have worked closely with stakeholders to develop this evidenced-based policy to further protect the welfare and safety of our racing greyhounds.
βWith incidences of high temperatures becoming a more regular occurrence, it has been designed to provide tracks with a structured approach to help mitigate the effects of hot weather and provides clear guidance for when this policy applies.
βThe most significant change is that the policy states that racing should be cancelled or suspended if temperatures at the track reach 34C.
βIt is the trackβs responsibility to take and record these readings and to make the decision to suspend or cancel racing.
βBelow the figure of 34C, tracks will continue to monitor temperature readings and employ a number of special measures to ensure all greyhounds are comfortable, cool and hydrated.
βWith extreme hot weather forecast for the next few days, I have spoken with some promoters who are already considering cancelling their race meetings.
βThis decision is based not solely on the viability of the running at their tracks but also the comfort of dogs being transported to and from the track.
βRacecourse executives have previously cancelled meetings at such high temperatures, but this policy now gives clear guidance and a top temperature for racing, highlighting how seriously we all take the safety and welfare of our greyhounds.β

John graded dogs canβt even get a trial when they are supposed to at the track my bitch was meant to trial Saturday night so I have made plans to go and watch her and they havenβt given her a trial they have put her on Sundayβs trial sheet instead and I canβt get there Sunday as iv made plans I cancelled plans to be there Saturday night but thatβs not happening now so Iβd say owner trainers and unattached trainers will too struggle the place is slowly but surely going down hill
