WHAT a difference a week made for Redzer Ardfert in the semis of the RPGTV St Leger over 710m at rain-soaked Perry Barr, Birmingham on Saturday night.
The Irish raider, trained by Brendan Maunsell, had seemed lost in the opening round but this time overcame a slow start in grand style. He set off after early leader Headford Ranger in determined fashion, showing impressive pace (16.64sec sectional), keeping middle and kicking on at the fifth turn. It proved an over four lengths victory in a fastest of the night 43.61sec. Brave Ark, who had initially trapped in front, kept on to take second for Matt Dartnall.
The other slow starters, Riverside Honey and Magical Icarus, were effectively run off their feet but both stayed on late.
Wide runners held the edge in the opening semi with hot-pot Antigua Fire impressively coming through the field for Mark Wallis to score with Paul Sallis’s Summer Savvy just holding on for second from Goldies Hotspur in a desperately close finish.
Piemans Noelle had taken them along early to the fourth before weakening and Summer Savvy, who broke well, then asserted before Antigua Fire, who had walked out of the boxes, surged clear on the run-in to score by two and a half lengths in 43.83sec.
Summer Savvy has the fastest sectional of those through with 16.61sec. Headford Ranger later recorded 16.42sec before tiring,
The second semi saw an eye-catching win by Patrick Janssens’ Skilful Sandie, who opened her UK account in splendid fashion, railing neatly at the third to take command from fast starting Avastorm, who had taken them along for team Wallis. The winner romped home by over five lengths in 43.85sec.
Draw for next Saturday’s £15,000 decider:
1 Redzer Ardfert 2 Skilful Sandie 3 Brave Ark 4 Avastorm (m) 5 Antigua Fire (w) 6 Summer Savvy (w)

The Perry Barr scene on Saturday as Sandra Gilmartin makes the presentation to Redzer Ardfert's delighted connections.Redzer Ardfert takes RPGTV Leger final....IRISH raider Redzer Ardfert on Saturday brought home the £15,000 RPGTV St Leger prize for Kerry-based trainer Brendan Maunsell, picking up early leader Avastorm at the fifth turn.
Owned by Kathleen Clifford and Pat Reddan, he is the first Irish-based winner of the long distance Classic, staged over Perry Barr’s 710m. Antigua Fire, caught up in early trouble that saw Skilful Sandie end up on deck, stayed on well for second with Avastorm giving Mark Wallis second and third home.
Redzer Ardfert scored by over three lengths in 43.12sec and is now set to take in a supporting open on Irish Leger final night back at Limerick next Saturday, when kennelmate Cash Is King runs from trap six in a bid to make it an incredible Leger final double.
After that it will be the Night of Stars for Redzer Ardfert. Connections ended up thoroughly enjoying the Perry Barr experience and pledged to return next year
The winning trophy was presented by Sandra Gilmartin of Paddy Power, Coventry, the new Racing Post/SIS Betting Shop Manager of the Year. Originally from Ireland herself, she said: “It’s been a wonderful evening and I felt particularly proud to be congratulating ‘another’ Irish winner.”
