Ice On Fire runs away with Alconex All England Cup
ICE ON FIRE completed an unbeaten run through the Alconex All England Cup when overcoming a tricky trap one draw to land the £8,000 prize at Newcastle on Thursday.
Without a previous win from the red box and seen as likely to move off, he duly did exactly that, baulking the alongside Nadurra Dutch. However, Ice On Fire, trained by Jimmy Fenwick for Dave Spraggon, has exceptional early and he used it to then power clear and it was race over. He scored by six lengths from Roxholme Jim in a night’s fastest 28.16sec.
Fenwick said: "That was awesome. He’s not really broken from trap one but he’s shown what I’d say was lethal early pace and ran the bend beautifully. I’d say it’s just best ever run and he’s still a pup really, it was his second birthday yesterday.
"He’ll go to Nottingham now on Monday week for the Eclipse, we know he likes it there."
It was a great night for team Fenwick with a total of four winners on the gala card.
Zeno earlier made all for Gary Ferguson to romp the £1,500 Aquajet Great North Fun final over 670m. He won by over six lengths in 40.80sec
Kevin Hutton’s Magical Vera took the £1,500 PBU LTD Angel Of The North Oaks final. She made all to score by three and a half length in 28.67sec for the 480m
With a month to go, Newcastle GM Ian Walton has confirmed that the 18 runner Laurels will be on the same format as last year – a Category 2, 18 runner competition over the 480 metre course with a £5,000 first prize.
He said: “We have applied for the dates of the Thursday 12th and 19th of December to coincide with Alconex Northern Puppy Derby and are awaiting confirmation from GBGB. I am also awaiting confirmation from one of the sponsors, but we are conscious that trainers need to plan ahead, and wanted to give as much notification as we can. Whatever the decision, the first prize is guaranteed.”
In what already promises to be a high profile meeting, Walton is hoping that the supporting card will provide a high quality veterans race.
He said: “We are conscious of the welfare importance of having races for the older dogs and we staged our first ever senior handicap race last week won by Kellsoboro Moll.
“There are a lot of veterans still competing in high class company; we have one here in Cooneen Jack who is still in A1 who I would expect to be entered. But there should be others big kennels here for the Laurels and Puppy Derby who will also have veterans still capable of performing in good company. We would love to see them.
“We are quite fortunate that our veterans opens usually fill, though usually with graders. But I am aware that some visiting trainers with dogs in big finals are reluctant to enter veterans for fear that the races will take place late in the meeting when they want to be heading home.
“If we can fill it, I will make sure that it takes place before the finals. If there was enough interest beforehand, I would try to find some extra prize money.”

Newcastle boss Ian Walton is concerned at the lack of outside trialists for the forthcoming Alconex Northern Puppy Derby.
The first round of the 36 runner event for 2018 pups gets underway next Thursday, and to date there has been little interest from Southern trainers in the £8,000 Category One event.
He said: “I understand that the Trafalgar Cup has had a very high quality of entry and some of those in the final on Saturday might not have had the chance to get here. So maybe some of the entries will go into the first round without a trial. I have no idea.”
Walton’s concern extends to how the slow Puppy Derby take-up may also affect the other events due to take place with the Laurels still to be advertised in the GBGB Calendar.
He said: “I realise that we were late finalising the Laurels situation but we had a difficult situation to resolve and it certainly isn’t ideal that it still hasn’t been advertised. There must also be a chance that the plan to run Ice On Fire in the Laurels might put some people off. Hopefully not. He is an exceptional greyhound but certainly not unbeatable depending on trap draws.
“As promised, there will also be a full supporting card on final night (December 19) including a veterans race worth £350 to the winner and a 706 metre one-off worth £500.”
