Oaks second round the highlight at Swindon this lunchtime....BY MATT NEWMANVELVET JULIET set the standard in the English Oaks heats at Swindon on Saturday and can stamp her class once more in Wednesday’s heat five of the second round over 476m at Swindon (12.48, live on TRP).
The calculated time of Angela Harrison's bitch was quicker than the current track record, albeit over a relatively new distance, showing her quality and the Sunderland Classic heroine can further her claims for outright honours with another trap-to-line display.
Liz McNair holds a strong hand in the competition with Queen Dolly expected to get the better of her litter sister, Queen Franklin, at 12.04.
Queen Dolly did not come away as well in the first round as she had in a trial stakes here but a return to her trapping best should see her turn handy before asserting down the far side.
Paul Meek can grab some limelight from McNair with Emers Cookie in the 12.18 where Queen Beyonce will have to box clever from three to avoid the pair on her inside.
The draw in red looks a big plus for Meek’s bitch who finished third in the Oaks decider in 2018. She clearly enjoys her racing at Swindon and can book her place in Monday's semis.
Heat six at 1.04 looks an interesting battle in prospect with Sonic Spur getting the nod.
She was twice in front of Sheldan on her way to the Yorkshire St Leger final at Doncaster and will be looking to confirm that form for Chris Akers over this shorter trip.
Both were fluent winners in the opening round but Sonic Spur strikes as the more likely of the pair to repeat that.
The opening contest in the second round at 11.48 can go the way of the Jill Sutherst-trained Witton Derecho who missed the kick last week but is generally a far better trapper than that.
Winner of the Northern Plate at Newcastle in September, she has kept smart company this year and can get the better of Kevin Hutton’s Bull Run Byte.
Dilly Dilly has some flying times at Newcastle to her credit, including a 28.14sec (calc) A1 success last month, also running top class kennelmate Ice On Fire to two lengths back in October where she stayed to good effect late on.
She has taken well to this track, her early pace can see her turn front rank and from there she can turn the screw for Jimmy Fenwick in the 12.33.
There is also open action at Harlow's evening SIS meeting where Doreens Girl can finish best to claim the 7.54 over 592m for Keith Crew.
She got back in the win column last week, her stamina a potent weapon off the sixth bend.
*Pro Pearl (lame, 2.15pm) was on Tuesday withdrawn lame from the Oaks at Swindon leaving T6 vacant in heat six of Wednesday’s second round at 1.04.

KIM BILLINGHAM cheered her two into Saturday’s Oaks final at Swindon after notching a memorable 1-2 in the opening semi although bet365 afterwards dismissed the chances of her pair.
After first bend bunching, Ballymac Saga led at the third to beat her early paced kennelmate Ballymac Cloud by nearly four lengths in 28.68sec.
New favourite is Chris Akers’ Sonic Spur, who romped her semi by seven lengths in a fastest 28.10sec. Odds-on Queen Beyonce went out here in fourth. The other eliminator saw a 16-1 turn-up from Liz McNair’s Queen Franklin, who held Bull Run Byte by three quarters when making all in 28.23sec with ante-post jolly Velvet Juliet missing out by a neck.
Queen Franklin is now the sole wide seed in the decider.
Swindon’s £15,000 Oaks final, 476m Saturday (with odds from bet365):
1 Bull Run Byte (2-1) 2 Ballymac Cloud (33-1) 3 Ballymac Saga (16-1) 4 Touchdown Erin (25-1) 5 Sonic Spur (m) (11-8) 6 Queen Franklin (w) (9-4)
