A clean sweep of Central Park favourites had layers licking their woundsLayers hit as all 12 Central Park favourites oblige.....BY JONATHAN KAYAN unprecedented 12 from 12 winning favourites at Central Park’s evening meeting on Sunday left bookmakers licking their wounds but also admitting the outcome could have been far worse.
Nicoles Rhythm set the ball rolling at the all-open fixture when landing odds of 1-2 in a 480m maiden and was followed in by another 11 market leaders, including in the two Springbok semi-finals, at odds of 1-4, 1-2, 1-3 (three times), evens (three times), 11-10 (twice) and 5-4.
An SP accumulator returned odds of just over 528-1 and there was trepidation in trading rooms up and down the country yesterday in scenes reminiscent of ‘Dettori Day’ at Ascot in 1996 when figures were tallied up.
Pat Cooney of bet365, who ironically had been guesting in the RPGTV studio as the carnage unfolded, said: “It was definitely our biggest losing meeting since RPGTV started and we lost on all 12 races.
“Seaglass Phantom, Troy Bella, Galloping Moon, Magical Vera and Affleck Bolt were odds-on winners and by far the most popular selections in multiples.
“We have a wide staking variety of winning accumulators, with smaller staking bets including more selections. We did think it looked a punter friendly card, but we priced the winners up accordingly and have no complaints.
“It was still a winning day for the company with a pair of 0-0 draws after 90 minutes in the two big football matches.”
For Coral, spokesman David Stevens said: “We can’t remember a meeting where all 12 races were won by the market leaders, and while half of the winners were sent off at odds-on, anyone who did put the dozen winners together would have been rewarded with a 528-1 return at SP.
“The only saving grace for us was that this happened on a Sunday night, rather than on a busier evening, but we’ve still been hit for six figures on what was a super Sunday for greyhound punters,” he added.
Betfred’s sports trading manager Paul Dunning said: “Despite losing well into five figures, I have to say the damage could have been a lot worse. For a start, for contractual reasons Central Park is not shown in our shops on a Sunday evening so all the damage has been limited to on-line.
“Secondly, no massive payouts have been highlighted which indicates that no-one has gone through the card so a bullet was dodged there.
“Finally, half of the races were won by odds-on shots and there are plenty of punters who won’t back dogs at odds-on, another blessing.” Ladbrokes’ greyhound product lead James Pryce said: “Coming in this morning I feared the worst but now feel we somewhat dodged a bullet considering the set of results that faced the industry.
“We were fortunate that the results fell in what would be the quietest period of the week in shops and also the League Cup going to extra time and penalties would likely have offered us some respite!
“Our digital business was affected more than the retail business - across both brands all channels we’ll have lost in the region of £100,000.
“The best bet of note was a £4.65 11-fold which returned just over £1,600, the customer missed out on going through the card by leaving out the maiden won by Droopys Tops from their bet.”
Hills’ Derek Hope said: “I was expecting to come into a nightmare this morning and, although we naturally lost, the figures don’t appear to be as bad as I feared. Looks like we might have missed the bombshell on this one.”
Paddy Power’s Patrick Wall reported: “We had couple of lucky punters who invested in six- and seven-fold winning multiples, and one punter who clicked a ten-fold but luckily no customer had the 12.”
