BOCKOS DOOMIE was fastest in the semi-finals of the Henlow Puppy Derby on Sunday afternoon with Patrick Janssens' youngster overcoming a modest start in the third of the 460m contests to win in a best-of-event 27.32sec, writes Jonathan Kay.
The 4-5 favourite went well to the bend after being caught somewhat flat-footed when traps opened and forced his way round before drawing away along the back straight to win by five lengths from Perrys Choice.
Trainer forecasts were the order of the day in the other semis with Dean Childs's 2-7 favourite Droopys Cannon overcoming a few scares along the way in the opener before pulling clear from the third bend to beat kennelmate Droopys Code by six lengths in 27.70sec.
The winner had to bid his time for racing room to open up then eventually took matters into his own hands by barging past early leader Distant Lucy.
Phil Simmonds got in on the act by landing a one-two himself in the second semi as his Dower Product made all to beat Headford Danny by three lengths in 27.48sec.
Draw for Sunday's Β£5,000 final: 1 Perrys Choice, 2 Bockos Doomie, 3 Dower Product, 4 Headford Danny, 5 Droopys Cannon, 6 Droopys Code (w).

BOCKOS DOOMIE powered clear of his rivals in the Β£5,000 Henlow Puppy Derby final on Sunday afternoon as his handler Patrick Janssens took a giant stride towards a first Trainer of the Year title, writes Steve Nash.
Much stronger in the market than fellow unbeaten finalist Droopys Cannon, the 11-10 favourite made a reasonable start in behind Perrys Choice and Dower Product and needed no second invitation when an inviting gap opened up on entering the back straight.
The Austin Whelan and Bev Lochead-owned September 2017 youngster quickly settled the issue as he drew right away to beat a gallant Droopys Cannon, for whom trap five proved the expected major handicap, by almost six lengths in 27.24sec for the 460m course.
Perrys Choice was another three lengths back in third, just outstaying Droopys Code for that position.
Janssens said afterwards: βThis is a truly special pup. He did everything right to get into a good position coming off the second bend and I was confident it was all over from there as his back straight pace is brilliant, and he stays too.
βSince his very first trial at Central Park he looked exceptional but the Derby just came a little too soon. Heβs quickly matured and today proves that.
βThere an open for him on Sussex Cup night at Hove, followed by a return to Nottingham for the Puppy Classic.β
Hazel Kemp, whose daughter Michelle Brown trains third-placed Perrys Choice, was another to pay tribute to the winner saying: βHe's some dog.β
Although Janssens missed out in Saturday's Guys & Dolls final at Crayford, second and third places there allied to yesterday's Category One success has seen him extend his advantage over multiple reigning champion Mark Wallis in the Trainer of the Year standings.
Going into Sunday night's racing, Janssens was 172 points clear of Wallis who has won the title on ten occasions including an unbroken run since 2012.
Trainer of the Year standings
1 Patrick Janssens, 616 points, 2 Mark Wallis 444, 3 Kevin Hutton 324, 4 Seamus Cahill 319, 5= Liz McNair & Hayley Keightley 287
