SNEYD TURNED DOWN OTHERS TO RE-SIGN FOR REDS SALFORD star halfback Marc Sneyd has revealed that he turned down interest from elsewhere before signing a new two-year deal with the Red Devils.
The 33-year-old is currently enjoying a rich vein of form at Salford and, with his contract due to expire at the end of the current season, was attracting the attention of other clubs. St Helens were one of those thought to be interested as they look to replace NRL-bound Lewis Dodd for 2025.
But for Sneyd, his first choice was the Red Devils and the new deal will mean he has spent a decade with the club over two different spells.
โIโm not going to name any other teams, but I did speak to a couple of others,โ Sneyd told League Express.
โBut when the right offer from Salford was on the table, it was signed pretty much straight away.
โThe group of players here, the coaches, everything about the place means you go into training happy every day. You want to be here and want to be out on the field with the lads. Itโs an enjoyable place to be.
โMaybe thatโs what my recent form has come down to. It helps as well that a group of players are all hitting form at the same time, that becomes a spiral effect. If one players does one thing right, then the next player is better, and the next player is better and so on. Weโre quite fortunate with that and I have hit my form because others have.
โIโm happy to have got the deal done. Thereโll be quite a lot of players with those things hovering over their heads for the next couple of weeks and months, so I was quite keen to get something done as early as possible so I can just concentrate on the rest of the season.
โI have now got two more years here and hopefully we can do something special in that time.โ
Sneyd earned another three Albert Goldthorpe medal points for his performance in Fridayโs 18-16 win over Huddersfield.
But he admits they were lucky to come away with the win after three late tries from Huddersfield, after winger Elliot Wallis had been sent off, almost overturned an 18-0 deficit.
โWe lost our way a little,โ admitted Sneyd.
โWe were fully in control; weโd scored a few times and had a grip on the game. But towards the back end, when they went down to twelve men, they just got better. A few defensive decisions from us were awful and we were fairly lucky to hold on at the end.
โBut we got the two points, and weโre at that stage of the season where that is all that matters.
โWe have still got a lot of things to sharpen up when it comes to our performance, but itโs a win and we move on to Leigh on Friday.
โEvery time we play them it is always a close game and a bit of a warlike battle, so weโll be fully prepped for them.โ

SALFORD RED DEVILS 'BACK DOWN TO EARTH WITH A BIG BUMP'
LEIGH put days of press speculation and stories about several playersโ futures behind them with a convincing victory against Salford, with the outstanding Josh Charnley providing the icing on the cake with his 300th career try.
The two sides last met at Easter with the Red Devils supreme, but this time Leigh scored two tries in the first twelve minutes and, despite a Salford try from Ryan Brierley, they never allowed their opponents back into the game.
โWe had an 80-minute performance tonight and our defence was outstanding,โ said their coach Adrian Lam.
โIโm just pleased that weโve gone on with the second half this time around and got the result that we deserve.
โIt was a big focus on ensuring we started well and we got that bang on right. I was just really proud that we played some of our best rugby.โ
Lam brought prop forward Robbie Mulhern back into his side as well as Ed Chamberlain, after his brief loan period at Hull FC.
The Red Devils were underpowered in the middle of the field. Coach Paul Rowley brought Amir Bourouh and King Vuniyayawa back after suspension and injury respectively, with injury keeping Shane Wright, Joe Shorrocks, Andrew Dixon, Joe Mellor and Gil Dudson out of the squad. And they were further hampered by the loss of Jack Ormondroyd to a rib injury.
The Leopards opened their account in the sixth minute when Umyla Hanley juggled the ball after Matt Moylan ghosted from left to right before passing across the ten-metre line. The fullback goaled and Leigh led 6-0.
The Leopards looked hungry and their forwards chewed through the middle again after Ormondroyd had left the field. A grubber kick from Lachlan Lam saw Charnley chasing through to ground at the corner and Moylan goaled from the left touchline to extend the advantage to 12-0.
Salford finally had some respite when Ryan Brierley was tackled in the air and, from the resulting penalty, the Red Devils tried to make inroads. Tim Lafai linked with Kallum Watkins and his kick had Ethan Ryan chasing before Charnley kicked the ball dead.
From the resulting drop-out Vuniyayawa made ground before Brierley supported Watkins to sail over in front of the North Stand that once sang his name. Marc Sneyd goaled and it was 12-6.
Salford then had a Nene Macdonald try ruled out after an obstruction in the background and Leigh moved clear.
Chris Atkin split the Leigh line but was ruled to have knocked on, and the Red Devils appeared well in the contest as the game approached the half-hour.
But then a wonderful pass from Lam had Hanley dashing for the corner for the Leopardsโ third try in the 34th minute, which this time was not converted by Moylan.
Salford were at short odds to score moments later only for Oliver Partingtonโs pass to go to ground.
The hosts had one final chance of points when the outstanding Brad Dwyer won a late penalty, but Moylan sent his kick wide and the Leopards had to be content with a 16-6 half-time advantage.
Three minutes into the second half Charnley turned back the clock, dashing 65 metres after beating Nene Macdonald to dive in at the corner for his second try of the game and his 300th professional try. Zak Hardaker goaled after taking over the kicking duties from Moylan and landing all four second-half conversions.
The Leopards hit Salford with another when Lamโs angled kick was well collected by Kai OโDonnell and he unselfishly handed on for Matt Davis to ground.
After winning a set restart, the Leopards moved close before Dwyer picked his way through to the posts brilliantly from dummy-half.
Salford won possession back from the restart and late in the tackle count Ethan Ryan smartly released the ball to Macdonald, who was held up in-goal, and on the other flank, Lafaiโs offload only found Leigh hands.
Salford then enjoyed some field position, before Moylan somehow stole forty metres after collecting a kick behind his own posts.
Dwyer was at his influential best again, bursting out of dummy-half after 67 minutes before finding Lam on his shoulder to dash to the line and send the home fans into raptures.
OโDonnell was held up, and a further smart Moylan kick was palmed out of play by Salford. Another expansive play had Charnley braced for the corner and Salford did just enough to prevent the score before Lafai responded with a great consolation try, beating three players in a run to the line in the 74th minute.
โLeigh were very good,โ said Salford coach Paul Rowley.
โThey played the game much tougher than us and ultimately, when it comes down to the fundamentals of running hard and tackling hard, Leigh totally dominated.โ
GAMESTAR: Brad Dwyer was in fine form around dummy-half and had an energetic game behind his pack.
GAMEBREAKER: Matt Davisโ try on 47 minutes put Leigh 28-6 up and there was no way back for Salford.
