BAGS reveal dates for the early Sky meetings

Sky Sports coverage returns on March 19 with a double-header

  

BAGS has produced the first working schedule of events to be shown live on Sky Sports.
Greyhound racing returns to the station on Tuesday March 19 with a star double header
from Wimbledon featuring the Racing Post Juvenile and the as yet unsponsored
Springbok final for novice hurdlers.

Sky programmes are expected to run from 7.30pm to 9.30pm, with the feature event at
9.15pm. This will allow races to also be broadcast by SIS into betting shops,
further raising the sport’s profile.

Other definite news from Bags was the last four rounds of the William Hill Derby, ie
from Saturday June 15 - the third round onwards - will also be shown live on Sky.

With fewer total slots available, just 22 compared with 35 last year, priority was offered to Shawfield and the
Scottish Derby final, but because the particular weekend slot was not available
due to other commitments at Sky, Shawfield decided against staging its showpiece
on a Tuesday.

The Trainers' Championship, for which a sponsor is also being sought, is to be at
Yarmouth on Wednesday March 27.

Kinsley gets Gymcrack Sky slot, Arc on May Day

 

The Racing Post Juvenile kicks off the 2013 Sky Sports schedule on Tuesday March 19
at Wimbledon, the week after Cheltenham.


Sky Sports' first show has been confirmed as Tuesday March 19, from Wimbledon and features a double header with the Racing Post Juvenile and the Springbok final.

Also definitely pencilled in is coverage of June’s William Hill Derby at Wimbledon, from the third round onwards. However, no longer on Sky will be the Scottish Derby due to the lack of a weekend slot at the end of April. Shawfield is nevertheless believed to be in discussions with backers around a sponsorship package.

A draft initial list has already seen one major change with the TV Trophy now being postponed until later in the year.

An additional slot became available from Sky, and with some rejigging of the Bags schedule, Kinsley will now feature with its Gymcrack final on Wednesday April 17, and the Arc returns to the roster, at Swindon on May Day, Wednesday May 1.

Bill Glass, Swindon’s ops director, said: “Everyone has had to be fluid, but we’re delighted to see the Arc involved again on Sky and we will now set about tying up the sponsorship and prizemoney details.”

SIS agrees new schedule for Sky greyhound nights

SIS and BAGS have agreed a new schedule of race times for nights when the new Sky greyhounds coverage will be included as part of the service to LBOs.

The format will provide appropriate gaps between all races to be shown live.

SIS has taken over the filming and production of the high-profile Sky Sports greyhounds programme after Sky pulled out. As well as the programme going out on the channel, the meetings will be beamed into betting shops for the first time.

Paul Ritchie, Betting Controller, SIS Betting, said: “Scheduling specialist Jim Proudfoot and I looked at numerous options before submitting a proposal to BAGS which we believe meets all the criteria.

"We had to consider fitting eight races into the two-hour programme with advertisement breaks, alongside the time required between races at each venue and a structured schedule across the two or three other meetings taking place on each evening.

"Jim managed to pull it all together to give a consistent programme for the tracks to work to on these high-profile evenings."

The Sky races are scheduled for 7.34; 7.49; 8.04; 8.19; 8.34; 8.49; 9.04; and 9.19 each evening.

Scott Harvey, Race Programme Controller, BAGS, said: "We’ve issued the times to tracks racing on Sky nights and I’m sure they will all work hard to ensure all races get the best exposure in the LBO service while Sky coverage concentrates on the premier meeting of the evening.

"We’re grateful to the SIS team who are planning a couple of rehearsal nights ahead of the first live show on Tuesday 19th March."

The first rehearsal is this Friday, February 22, at Wimbledon, followed by a full dress rehearsal, also at Wimbledon, on March 15.
