Ayamzaman scores in smart 23.78 at Romford

AYAMZAMAN relished returning to the track he runs best with a facile victory in heat three of the Coral on TV Trophy over 400m at Romford.

Mark Wallis’s dog drifted from 4-6 to 11-10 but the doubters were proved wrong as he quickly took command and sauntered to a seven lengths plus victory over Rio Minstrel in a best-of-night 23.78sec.

The market also proved a poor guide in heat one where Ernie Gaskin’s Shaneboy Ozzy, who was deposed as favourite by Murlens Crash, scored by nearly eight lengths in 23.85sec, while the local handler completed a double in heat two courtesy of Nans Turbo’s 24.11sec success.

David Pruhs' Collacolla Pedro was fastest (28.39sec) of the three heats for the Molson Coors 480m Trophy.

Missy voted best of Derby second round

KILARA MISSY, beaten in an A4 at Poole on May 25, has been ­chosen as RPGTV performance of the William Hill Derby second round after again qualifying despite huge odds.

Her closing 66-1 second to Droopys Loner, which followed her first round 100-1 third to Laughill George, earned the vote of the judging panel with the winning nomination coming from viewer Mike Relton who will present the award to the ­connections of Kilara Missy before racing on Saturday. She runs in the opening heat – where she is again the rank outsider.

Relton’s email persuaded the judging panel by stating: “It is almost impossible to choose one outstanding performance from all those produced by Vic, Eske, Droopys Jet etc over the two nights. However it could be reasoned that said performances were at least expected as they were all well fancied to run as they did. But there was one greyhound which exceeded ­anyone’s ­expectations, even perhaps those of the connections, I refer of course to David Merchant’s Kilara Missy who ran second to qualify at 66-1.

“For me the pleasure of ­watching this bitch qualify and the joy it must have brought to everybody watching, whether connections or not, was greater than that even witnessing the superstars win their heats. What a victory for the little man, what a great story a typical of the Derby and its history! Definitely for me the memory of the second round and well worth the award.”

Relton and a guest will ­afterwards enjoy the entire third round as VIP guests in Wimbledon’s restaurant.

Irish Derby champ Puma eyes Shelbourne defence

THE English Derby is naturally the focus of attention at present, but the ETS Irish Derby is also rapidly approaching and the exciting news is that reigning champion Skywalker Puma is ready to resume his racing career.

Matt and Frances O’Donnell have enjoyed a frustrating 2013 with their star tracker so far, but Matt could not hide the excitement in his voice as he reported yesterday that Puma is in terrific form and will be having a race or two around Shelbourne in the near future.

“It’s been a long year so far, but all our dogs are now coming into top form and Puma is perfect, there’s not a bother on him,” he said.
O’Donnell has said all along that when Puma returns he will be a better dog this year, and his recent trial runs would seem to back up that assertion.

A few weeks back he clocked 28.23sec for the 525 yards at Shelbourne, while on Saturday night he went under the sprint track record at Limerick when clocking 18.47sec for the 350 yards, some six spots inside the record held by Ballymac Best.

O’Donnell added: “That was some sprint run from Puma. I’ll give him a 525 trial around Limerick on Saturday and then we’ll look for a race at Shelbourne. He’s fit enough now as he’s a great dog to work at home.”

Knockglass Billy out of Derby after rough ride

THE Irish challenge for the William Hill Derby was reduced to nine yesterday with the news that Knockglass Billy will be out of action for up to six weeks due to an injury sustained at Wimbledon.

Trainer Graham Holland confirmed that his dog and his Saturday night faller Holborn Junior both returned with injuries that will keep them out of action for at least six weeks.

“Knockglass Billy sprained a hock," he said. "It's a recurrence of an injury he had before last year’s Laurels. To be honest I couldn’t understand all the comment about him moving off his bends. The only reason he had to get off the rails was due to crowding, he actually did well to stay on his feet.

"Holborn Junior has damaged his TFL [muscle] and was very sore after his fall. The whole English Derby experience was a bit of a disaster, but I have no doubt both dogs will be fine. I think Holborn Junior can turn into a special dog."

Knocklglass Billy's official withdrawal time was 11.22am.

Feature event is Coventry's Modest Newdown Puppy Trophy final over 485m at 9.32 which is one of the RPGTV Flying Four races along with the three heats of the Tobertelly Queen Bitches Stake over the same course and distance (8.10, 8.58 and 9.48) - these races have been priced up early by bookmaker partners.

Johnnys looks the boy in Coventry puppy final

JOHNNYS BOY could hardly have been more impressive in the heats a week ago and Kath Harris's dog will surely be very hard to beat in the final of the Modest Newdown Puppy Cup over 485m at Coventry tonight (9.33).

The Monmore Puppy Derby finalist has proved perfectly suited to the stiff four-bend gallop at the Brandon and, although his trapping is rarely rapid, he tends to quickly recover so can turn handy before asserting along the back straight.

Brookside Ace, a candidate to improve markedly for his look round in the heats a week ago, could set the pace and is a good forecast link.
The other Flying Four races are three heats of the Tobertelly Queen Bitches Stake also over 485m with RUSSELENA BARBIE taken to last home in the first at 8.10 and reverse May 26 form with Express Flame. Zoos Caprice may be the chief threat.

FIONNTRA MOLLY has more to do in heat two at 8.58 than when winning on Sunday but it is tough to knock the winning time of 29.17sec she recorded then and the task can be passed.

The third heat at 9.48 looks a decent opportunity for MANDEVILLE ACE after an eye-catching 450m effort last week. She can be up with the pace from the outset and build a sufficient advantage to ensure victory.

Hills are betting on the Flying Four and go: 7-2 no winners, evens one winner, 2-1 two winners, 7-1 three winners and 100-1 that all four selections oblige.

Flying4: Phanter to floor rivals from four at Hove

MALBAY PHANTER is yet to win in six attempts from trap four but it can prove a case of seventh time lucky when Dean Childs's dog goes in Hove's 9.56 over 475m tonight.

Concerns about the draw are presumably behind bookmakers offering better than usual odds about the course and distance specialist, and they look worth taking even if he may require a bit of fortune to secure a run early on.

If anywhere near the action entering the back straight, his trademark surge from two to three should be too much for the opposition to handle although Bubbly Rocky will appreciate not having to face Ballymac Eske as at Wimbledon last weekend.

First of the Flying Four races is another 475m contest at 9.06 in which Seamus Cahill's GUINNESS WILD looks good on the back of a series of consistent performances in both victory and defeat of late.

PRINCESS PATI found Taranis Diva just a bit too speedy to the bend last week and was then forced to check but Norah McEllistrim's bitch can exact revenge when the meet again in the 10.26 finale over 515m. Key could be the presence of speedy After Liz in two who may be an early hazard for Taranis Diva.

Anything other than victory for Claude Gardiner's class-dropping DROOPYS XAVIER in the 10.11 over 695m will be a big surprise although he is naturally priced accordingly.

Hills are betting on the success of the Flying Four and go: 16-1 no winners, 2-1 one winner, 5-4 two winners, 11-4 three winners and 20-1 that all four selections oblige.

Derby fever sees Brian Clemenson eyeing return

BRIAN CLEMENSON, who recently celebrated his 50th birthday, is now studying his options for a return to the sport after taking a year’s sabbatical.

The former Hove handler, a three-time winner of the annual Trainers’ Championship meeting, says he has had several ideas put to him, but will not rush into anything. “I’ve helped out a bit at Paul Donovan’s and, with the Derby on, that definitely gets the blood going!” he said yesterday.

“I suppose my ideal would be to find an investor who fancied having some open-race fun, and wanted a trainer like myself who has both fire and experience. I’ve got the bit between my teeth and feel I’ve something to prove.”

Clemenson decided on a step back from the sport after the recession took a hand. “It all got a bit on top of me – I’d made the mistake of getting involved with other businesses, nothing to do with greyhound racing.

“You can spend so much time running around and worrying, but the break has done me the power of good. I feel fantastic and my competitive instinct, if anything, feels even sharper. I want to add to the eight Olympics, four Regencys, three Sussex Cups and five Brighton Belles I landed at Hove alone.”

Clemenson has had four Derby finalists, going closest with Big Freeze, beaten three-quarters of a length by Droopys Scholes in 2004. “There’s little better in life than the thrill of a Derby runner,” he added. “And best of all is the week between qualifying and the final itself. I’d love to experience that again, but most importantly of all, win it. Being successful drives me. I’m looking forward to seeing what emerges – and who knows, maybe something in the management side could tempt me.”

Patrick Kelly, the Racing Post’s Hove correspondent for 27 years, said: “The biggest compliment I can pay Brian is that his record stands comparison with the legendary George Curtis. It would be great to see him back in harness.”

Tom poised to head the charge in RPGTV finale

HEAD ITON TOM might not be as famous or indeed talented as some of those he meets in the 10.40 over 575m at Romford but he has a huge heart and that will serve him well in a cracking finale to the card.

Ernie Gaskin’s charge ended a losing run of five when scoring in trademark front-running style seven days ago and a similarly fast start can see him once again dominate from the front.

Smiler Jack, the 2012 Champion Stakes winner, is entitled to be better for this return to six bends, while Ayamzabeauty and Planning may hinder each other’s prospects on the outside.

The Gaskin kennel can also provide the winner of the other 575m contest to feature in the Flying Four at 10.11 in the shape of OAKFIELD LUCY.

She saw her bid for a hat-trick ended by Lenson Pele in a final two weeks ago but has an excellent chance to dominate this time and will be tough to dislodge if getting to the front.

Mark Wallis can emulate Gaskin by sending out two winners beginning with AYAMZAMAN in the feature final over 400m at 9.24. Fastest in the heats on Monday, he is far better drawn in five than is fellow emphatic winner Shaneboy Ozzy in four and he can quickly assert.

Like Ayamzaman, kennelmate GLANMIRE LAD did not last long in the Derby but a return to happy hunting ground Romford should bring about a revival in fortunes when he goes in the 10.26 over 400m.

Hills are betting on the Flying Four and go: 9-2 no winners, 11-10 one winner, 7-4 two winners, 13-2 three winners and 80-1 that all four selections are successful.

Ayamzaman to be a Romford TV star

AYAMZAMAN generally struggles when asked to stretch out in distance, but 400m around Romford is absolutely ideal and Mark Wallis’s dog can again prove the point with victory in the £750 final of the Coral on TV Trophy tonight (9.24, live Racing Post Greyhound TV).

His heat victory on Monday, when he quickly asserted to score by more than seven lengths from Rio Minstrel in a best-of-night 23.78sec (+20), was a typical performance. The fact Shaneboy Ozzy had earlier gone marginally quicker in calculated terms (23.96sec) and off a length or so faster sectional need not be a major concern.

A bigger factor is likely to be the draw, which sees the selection in five – from where he has had considerable success in the past – while Shaneboy Ozzy goes from an unfamiliar berth in four.

Nans Turbo can never be ruled out of any race he contests at Romford and it is possible to make a value argument for him, but Ayamzaman is by far and away the most likely winner and gets a confident vote as a result.

There are five opens at Perry Barr, where Pat Rosney’s Ballymac Jones can stretch his winning run to four with victory in the 8.21 over 275m. Corren Price’s Kerris Hawk appeals as the best bet of the night in the 8.56 over 480m.

The November 2011 youngster made a winning British debut at Coventry on Sunday despite making a hash of the start, showing terrific early pace and he gained valuable experience of this course in a trial on June 1.
