DROOPYS LORENZO has been installed as 9- 4 favourite by Hills for the 2013 Springbok, the final of which will form a live-on-Sky Sports double-header with the Racing Post Juvenile at Wimbledon on March 19.
Dean Childs’s dog, a Derby quarter-finalist on the flat last year, has impressed in his short hurdles career to date. An eyecatching debut second to Mo Realta Frank at Crayford followed by an emphatic trial stakes victory over the 480m Springbok course at Wimbledon, then a Romford win on Friday.
Second favourite at 11-4 is Lenson Johnny, Tony Collett’s dog who currently tops the Springbok qualifying standings on 29.32sec, two spots faster than Droopys Lorenzo’s best.
One greyhound unlikely to be Springbok-bound is Saturday’s impressive Crayford H3 winner Offshore Becky, shortly to be renamed Crayford Wiggle after t he trac k’s starters wave-off gimmick.
“She would be qualified as Saturday was her first hurdles win,” said trainer Ian Stevens, “but the whole point about renaming her was to help publicise Crayford.
It’s a bit of fun and we’ll stick to racing her on Saturdays there when she can be seen on RPGTV.”

WILLIAM HILL have renewed their sponsorship of the Springbok, another positive development in the wake of the Bags-brokered deal which will see live coverage of greyhound racing continue on Sky Sports throughout 2013, writes Jonathan Kay.
The £5,000 novice hurdlers' championship forms part of a double-header with the Racing Post Juvenile in the first meeting under the new arrangement at Wimbledon on Tuesday, March 19. Richard Thomas, head of PR operations for Hills, said: "We're delighted to once again put our name to one the most exciting events in the greyhound calendar. "The William Hill Springbok has a long and prestigious history and the competition will provide plenty of thrills, with the final part of a fantastic gala card." Lenson Johnny, currently atop the qualifying standings with a 29.32sec trial effort over the 480m course, is in trial stakes action at Wimbledon tonight. He is 11-4 second favourite with the sponsor behind 9-4 Droopys Lorenzo, while the 7-1 third-in Mash Mad Snowy makes his hurdles debut at Crayford this lunchtime. The deadline for posting a qualification time, and for entries, is noon on Wednesday, March 6 with the heats on Saturday, March 9 and semis the following Friday.
