Farloe Iceman: encouring trial at Swindon on Tuesday
Farloe Iceman on the Swindon comeback trail
FARLOE ICEMAN, who has not raced since suffering a bumpy ride behind Mags Gamble in the final of the Ladbrokes Gold Cup at Monmore last August, posted an encouraging 29.07sec (-40) in a 480m solo at Swindon yesterday.
Matt Dartnall’s charge, winner of the 2011 Nottingham Puppy Classic but limited to just 13 races since, was comfortably the fastest of the session, with the 29.33sec of Rainham Chris next best.
The Category One Pin Point Recruitment Arc over the course and distance next month would be one obvious early target for the September 2009 dog.
Heats for 36 runners are Friday afternoon April 19 (SIS), semis Friday afternoon April 26 (SIS), £8,000 final (live on Sky Sports and SIS) Wednesday May 1.

Cryan on course for Pin Point Arc defence
BALLYMAC CRYAN warmed up for the defence of his Arc title with a smart trial over the Category One competition’s course and distance when posting 28.70sec (-20) over 480m at Swindon on Tuesday. Matt Dartnall’s charge, who outstayed Droopys Loner to claim the event in 2012, is yet to race this year but looked sharp as he drew clear from halfway to beat kennelmate Ballymac Wander by four lengths. Fastest trial of the day, however, came from Kev Hutton’s ex-Irish Screen Critic with a 28.67sec effort in beating kennelmates Stanton Apollo and Taranis Diva. Screen Critic did not win in six Irish races but did reach the final of the Connolly’s Red Mills Unraced Stake at Clonmel in early February. Hutton’s versatile Ding Hero went round in 29.02sec. Mark Wallis is planning a raid on the competition and put a team of six through their paces yesterday with Darian Chief (28.82sec) the quickest. Others to go round were Ard To Beat (28.86sec), Bridge Bandit (28.91sec), Bridge Ruth (28.93sec), Baran Knights (28.95sec) and Darian Creek (29.11sec). The £8,000 Pin Point Recruitment Arc closes to entries at noon next Monday ahead of heats at the Wiltshire track’s afternoon Bags meeting on Friday, April 19. Semis are a week later and the final (live on Sky Sports & SIS) on Wednesday, May 1.

Arc looks right up Alley's street after smart trial
THE Liz McNair-trained Shaneboy Alley completed his Pin Point Recruitment Arc preparation with an excellent best-of-session 28.90sec (-60) trial over 480m before racing at Swindon on Saturday.
That was five spots quicker than the next best time recorded by Barrie Draper’s Fire Height Spec as he beat kennelmate Ballymac Arkle by just over four lengths in a two-runner workout, while Draper’s Farloe Warhawk clocked 29.23sec in a solo.
Chris Stringer’s Hernandez beat Carol Weatherall’s Calico Classic by a length in 29.19sec, while others to go round included Butts Mott and Lenson Johnny (both 29.24sec), Afew Dollarsmore (29.27sec), Tulligoline (29.33sec) and Lenson Champ, who beat Lenson Peter just over a length in 29.36sec.
The £8,000 Pin Point Recruitment Arc closes to entries at noon on Monday ahead of Friday afternoon's heats.
The semi-finals are a week later with the final, live on Sky Sports and SIS, on Wednesday, May 1.

LONGWOOD FANTASY, trained privately by Colin Callow, set the standard in the heats of the Pin Point Recruitment Arc when storming through at halfway in the fourth before drawing clear to beat defending champion Ballymac Cryan by three lengths in 28.34sec.
Liz McNair’s Shaneboy Alley made a winning British debut with an excellent all-round perfornmance in the final heat as he led from the first bend and kept on powerfully to score by more than two lengths from Longwood Bound in 28.47sec, while there was a shock 16-1 win for John Mullin’s Tyrur Andy in the third as he beat Ballymac Arkle by a length in 28.41sec.
Training honours undoubtedly belonged to local handler Kev Hutton who landed a treble courtesy of Screen Critic (28.57sec), Jolly Bullseye (28.67sec) and Slippery Patch (28.74sec) in addition to also qualifying Gemstone Jack.
Draw for Friday’s semi-finals - first: 1 Ballymac Cryan, 2 Jolly Bullseye, 3 Farloe Iceman, 4 Longwood Warrior, 5 Tyrur Andy (m), 6 Bit View Micko (m).
Second: 1 Afew Dollarsmore, 2 Longwood Fantasy, 3 Gemstone Jack (m), 4 Tyrur Willyjoe (w), 5 Shaneboy Alley (w), 6 Screen Critic (w).
Third: 1 Droopys Reason, 2 Ballymac Arkle, 3 Ardkill Star, 4 Longwood Bound, 5 Slippery Patch, 6 Bridge Ruth (m).

Longwood Warrior(T4) collars Jolly Bullseye in Friday's semi-final Wayward Warrior leaves it late in Callow double COLIN CALLOW took the training honours in Friday’s Pin Point Recruitment Arc semis over 480m at Swindon by landing a double, but also took home a headache as his opening winner, Longwood Warrior, once again proved wayward.
Chasing clear leader Jolly Bullseye, he closed in rapidly from the third bend but, on drawing alongside, seemed satisfied his work was done and almost taunted his tiring rival before deigning to secure a short-head victory in 28.82sec.
Supporting £500 opens (others £100) over various distances close to entries at noonFriday.
Draw for Wednesday’s £8,000 final (live on Sky Sports/SIS):
1 Longwood Warrior, 2 Longwood Bound, 3 Jolly Bullseye, 4 Droopys Reason, 5 Screen Critic (w), 6 Shaneboy Alley (w).

BY JIM CREMIN of THE RACING POST
Let's hope this is one Warrior not go to war!
WITH a restricted 18-runner field for the Ladbrokes Scottish Derby, I had assumed the track’s racing office would face a nightmare in trying to pick and choose from a surfeit of entries.
Well it was a form of nightmare, but from the perspective of struggling to fill the event! Clearly the presence of Ballymac Eske put people off, but the concept of an 18-runner ‘Classic’ also did not strike a chord with all trainers.
It almost felt as if we were back to the bad old days at Wimbledon, when the only Irish trainer who religiously came over every year was Fraser Black. Further evidence of greyhound racing’s reason to be grateful to Black came when he arrived with the only Irish entry for Shawfield – and what a cracking race his Tarbrook Tornado ran too on his season’s debut, winning Saturday’s final heat.
Black also kindly returned the Scottish Derby perpetual trophy on behalf of last year's winning trainer, Paul Hennessy, and he said beforehand he was only expecting to it hand it over for a week!
Local handler Pat Flaherty got two into Saturday’s £10,000 final – but heat two winner Greenwell Lark was only in there to ‘make up the numbers’. She has real pace, took her chance, and is the sole bitch through.
Mags Gamble battled well here and with a break looks a big runner for Harry Williams.
It was exciting racing, topped by the opening heat where Ballymac Eske looked as though he was going to run them ragged when popping out, yet was given a race by Teejays Bluehawk, who really took off out of the second bend. The time was there, so it was two cracking efforts from the pair.
Ladbrokes, who do deserve thanks for making the event take place – helping to arrange to get it onto RPGTV too, now make Eske a 1-2 chance to land the prize. I guess that’s about right, but it’s going to be no routine coronation either. This final has the look of another real race about it.
What came over in tweets and emails is the genuine local interest and pride in Scotland’s race of the year, and the atmosphere at the track on Saturday is certainly special. If you can’t be there, tune into RPGTV.
Before that is the Pin Point Recruitment Arc final at Swindon live on Sky Sports on Wednesday night. I have enormous respect for Colin Callow and it’s not his fault one of his pair, Longwood Warrior, has been quite so wayward in both heat and semi of the event.
Callow, who I spoke to for the Trainer Quotes that appear in Wednesday’s paper, is hopeful that nighttime will make all the difference for his relatively young greyhound. He points to the open nature of Swindon and says in daylight, his dog lost his focus.
It sounds sensible and fingers crossed this proves to be correct, but Swindon seemed to have taken undue risk as in the days of my working in a racing office, the dog would have been automatically red-carded – although I do recall cases where people had Arsene Wenger-style moments of ‘not seeing anything'!
Disqualifying a greyhound is a serious matter, and nobody wants to do it unless they are certain. I did not realise the GBGB had indicated that a new definition of certainty includes ensuring actual contact has been made. That explains what otherwise seemed highly surprising.
The rule on interference used to be interpreted somewhat more loosely, and included any greyhound that found a rival dramatically and deliberately veering towards them. You might define that as interference through intent or threatening behaviour!
Is the modern day clarification for better or worse? Well even on any old-style ‘fighting’ scale, Longwood Warrior’s transgression would have been seen as relatively minor – compared to say being put into the fence – although the fact he turned his head inwards would have been taken as a negative. That said, his previous form does not suggests a core problem, and perhaps it is indeed just daylight at Swindon.
A problem for trainers is the lack of variety in modern day hare mechanisms, some greyhounds do need switching around to maintain their enthusiasm, and it was preferable to be readily able to go onto an inside Sumner for instance, which ran on a rail and jumped around. Every track today is just about the same, this has helped make the issue worse.
Callow to his credit was being level-headed about it all. You never know, Longwood Warrior could yet put all this behind him and turn into one of the sport’s champions – he is certainly fast enough. But that is the future, as it stands, nobody has a clue what might happen in Wednesday’s final. This is not staging greyhound racing the way that I was brought up.
But let's be positive. It's got everyone talking, and we've got two prestige televised occasions ahead on Wednesday and Saturday. At 11-2 (Bet 365) I've seen worse each-way bets than Longwood Warrior!
