Ultra-competitive William Hill Greyhound Derby reaches last 48

Trap two is now vacant in Wimbledon's heat three on Saturday



Knockglass Billy out of Derby after rough ride



THE Irish challenge for the William Hill Derby was reduced to nine yesterday with the news that Knockglass Billy will be out of action for up to six weeks due to an injury sustained at Wimbledon.

Trainer Graham Holland confirmed that his dog and his Saturday night faller Holborn Junior both returned with injuries that will keep them out of action for at least six weeks.

“Knockglass Billy sprained a hock," he said. "It's a recurrence of an injury he had before last year’s Laurels. To be honest I couldn’t understand all the comment about him moving off his bends. The only reason he had to get off the rails was due to crowding, he actually did well to stay on his feet.

"Holborn Junior has damaged his TFL [muscle] and was very sore after his fall. The whole English Derby experience was a bit of a disaster, but I have no doubt both dogs will be fine. I think Holborn Junior can turn into a special dog."

Knocklglass Billy's official withdrawal time was 11.22am.

Tyrur Sugar Ray: can strike in red-hot third round heat



Sugar Ray can land knockout blow in Derby



TYRUR SUGAR RAY looks drawn to see off fellow Irish big guns Droopys Jet and Kereight King in a fascinating opening heat in the third round of the William Hill Greyhound Derby over 480m at Wimbledon tonight (7.34, live on Sky Sports/SIS).

PJ Fahy’s dog has taken really well to the track and was a runaway winner in the second round. It was hard not to be impressed with the pace he showed from the second to third turn, even if he did also get the breaks in terms of running room on the inner.

Key this evening will be holding his pitch on the inside early, particularly in terms of not allowing Teejays Bluehawk to head him. Providing he does that, he can turn in a relatively handy position and capitalise on possible issues for his classy compatriots due to their proximity to fast-up Skate On.

Droopys Jet, from an unfamiliar draw in six, looks up against it for all that he was quite brilliant in round two, while Kereight King is perhaps best watched after a tough run last weekend. That said, trainer Pat Curtin sounded pretty bullish about his prospects when guesting on RPGTV on Wednesday.

Another Irish victory looks all but assured in heat two at 7.49 where it will be a shock if Liam Dowling’s Ballymac Vic does not maintain his unbeaten record in the competition.

There is no doubt he has had some relatively kind draws to date but he has shown his class all the same firstly by dominating throughout and then when not perturbed to be led by Bittles Bar last time.
He can lead home a clean sweep for the raiders, with Paul Hennessy duo Ringtown Snowy and Priceless Pilot fancied to follow him home in that order.

Barrie Draper saw his team reduced to two last week but both should safely make it through to the quarter-finals, with Ballymac Eske first to go in heat six at 8.49. It is possible that one or both of Loughteen Blanco and Stonepark Crash may lead him early, but he should never be too far off the pace and can make a telling move along the back-straight.

Farloe Warhawk looked right back to his best when sauntering to a seven lengths second-round win. Another slick exit, required to avoid middle-running Newinn Rocket early, can see him show better foot to the bend than hitherto unbeaten Screen Critic in heat seven at 9.04.

Perhaps the best bet of the night might come in the final heat at 9.19 where Mark Wallis’s still underrated Garryglass Rodge looks cracking value. There is plenty of other speed here in the shape of Bittles Bar and Shaneboy Alley in particular, so it could set up for finisher Holdem Spy, but Garryglass Rodge is capable of winning the charge to the bend and will be in great shape if he does.

The David Pruhs-trained Frisby Barney could be another winner from the front in heat five at 8.34, conversely Graham Box’s Bouncy Bocko (8.04) and Paul Young’s Airlie Impact (8.19) can come through late to take heats three and four respectively.

The 100-1 dream of Kilara Missy looked on when the Poole bitch trapped, she went to the bend with Droopys Jet, but he chopped her off at the turn and then she got badly tangled with Kereight King. There was general bunching at the second and suddenly Droopys Jet (6-1 with Hills) was well clear,. There was further crowding at the last, from which Tyrur Sugar Ray recovered best, with Teejays Bluehawk also running on as Skate On, who had also gone up fast, tired.

Winning trainer Fraser Black said he as proud on behalf of the owners. "He's in excellent form."

Paschal Taggart, joint owner, said: "He's running well and we have a real chance."

Same time here as heat one for Ballymac Vic. Cloheena Micky ran well again but was unlucky to have two exceptionally dogs on Ringtown Snowy and Priceless Pilot on his tail, Ballymac Vic trapped marginally behind Cloheena Micky, but was soon clear and he again ran the track wonderfully well. He was 4-1 clear favourite with Hills imediately after. Ringtown Snowy, winner of the Labrokes 600 at Shelbourne before the event, put up his best race at Wimbledon so far, setting after Ballymac Vic in determined fashion, then Priceless Pilot took off late. King Braldy and Blue Appeal never got into the race.

Shaneboy Spencer again showed searing early which arguably broke the heart of Droopys Loner, who had trapped marginally ahead, before getting beaten for pace up, then eased coming out of the second. Farloe Tango and Bouncy Bocko (totally left) came from way off the pace, Farloe Tango moving off on the last turn where Longwood Bound was crowded.

Airlie Impact ran a cracker to get up on the line, and he has yet to get his favoured trap six. Carkei Max and Sidaz Jack disputed it early, Carkei Max asserting at the third bend. Fermoy Henry moved wide early, crowding Benkatt Nero and Farloe Chico

2nd Hather George trap 6 four and a half lengths
3rd Frisby Barney trap 3 length and a quarter

This was clinical from Bonamassa Rocks (Birchy's Pricewise headline tip) and he is on the upgrade at the right time. He broke well and was soon clear. Hather George plugged on for second. Frisby Barney had gone up second. The others never got into the race, Benkaat Blue walking out.

You had to feel for Stonepark Crash's connections. He flew out, put Ballymac Eske under enormous pressure and was still leading rounding the last. But he folded on the run in and ended up missing out by a head on qualifying. The racing has been thrilling and this was another cracker with Eske plugging on to win, this after being crowded at the second and fourth turns. Loughteen Blanco had shown a nice burst but was crowded with Eske on the second and then tired. Islas Scolari and Droopys Ed Moses both finished fast, Droopys Ed Moses was still last at the third turn. Farloe Buddy never got going.

Screen Critic is in determined mood and picked up Farloe Warhawk here after the latter pinged and led to the third. Screen Critic has all round speed, and keeps winning. Jaytee Hellcat, very slow away, was caught up in first bend trouble that saw Money Talks end up on the deck. Newinn Rocket, who railed markedly at the bend (confirming his trainer's view) tired. Dinner Hunter ran on well after the trouble but just missed out.

Holdem Spy swooped to lead out of the fourth bend after crowding at the third with fast up Shaneboy Alley who had faced a tremendous duel with Jaytee Zeus. Bubbly Lucky and Garryglass Rodge were held up at the start. Bittles Bar ran well to take third from a tricky looking slot

BALLYMAC ESKE has passed every test asked of him in the event to date without winning over a vocal minority of doubters but Barrie Draper’s star has the ideal opportunity to do just that in the third quarter-final of the William Hill Greyhound Derby over 480m at Wimbledon on Tuesday (9.04, live on Sky Sports 3 and SIS).

A draw between Ringtown Snowy and Teejays Bluehawk is unlikely to prove challenging in terms of leading up on the rails and, even though Shaneboy Alley could be away on the outside, Ballymac Eske can quickly have him in his sights and move in along the back with Holdem Spy fancied to come through late for second.

However, kennelmate Farloe Warhawk looks vulnerable in the opening quarter-final at 8.34 drawn outside Shaneboy Spencer with Sidaz Jack also capable of getting in the mix early. All in all, this could set up for a finisher and PJ Fahy’s Tyrur Sugar Ray fits that criteria so he is taken to benefit from possible scrimmaging up front to pounce late.

Ballymac Vic gets his first serious test of the competition in the second quarter-final at 8.49 and there may be value in taking on the Irish star with compatriot Droopys Jet a definite potential hazard if he traps as well from one as he has recently from three and six, admittedly he did not break from the inside in round one.

The still unexposed Screen Critic has a brilliant make-up outside slow early duo Droopys Ed Moses and Islas Scolari so Kev Hutton’s dog looks the percentage call having shown he can win from the front or from behind.

The fourth-quarter final at 9.19 could be a race of two halves with Bonamassa Rocks and Bittles Bar bringing the pace to it and the likes of Farloe Tango, especially, Bouncy Bocko and even Airlie Impact all finishers. At his best, Martin White’s Bittles Bar is probably the speediest in the line-up early and he can build a sufficient lead to repel the closers.

Pat Curtin’s Whizzing Around, who showed more pace in the Derby than formlines suggest, is a sporting nap in the sprint opener at 7.34, while other one-off suggestions are Regal Bailio (7.49), Southview Ace (8.04) and Airforce General (8.19).

There are also two opens on Sheffield’s evening Bags card with the suggestions being Bowtime Fella (7.44) and Candlelight King (7.59).

Connections of Derby semi-final qualifiers will receive ‘keep the date’ reminders from sponsor William Hill regarding the Greyhound Derby luncheon next Monday. Owners and trainers of the six finalists will be invited to the event at Kettners in Soho, London (noon for 12.30pm).
