Wigan chairman Dave Whelan paved the way for manager Roberto Martinez to become the next Everton boss after reluctantly accepting the Spaniard's request to leave the club.
Martinez to leave Wigan
Talks had been ongoing between the pair over the last week since relegation from the Barclays Premier League followed their historic FA Cup win.
Martinez has been linked with the vacant job at Goodison Park ever since David Moyes was announced as Sir Alex Ferguson's successor at Manchester United and the Toffees made their move on Friday.
That appears to have persuaded the Wigan manager the time was right to end his four-year association with the club and although Whelan will not stand in the way of the 39-year-old, he will demand compensation.
Martinez remains in his post for the time being but Whelan told Press Association Sport: "Roberto wants to move on and I have got to accept it.
"Everton rang me and I said they have permission to talk to him. I would never stop Roberto talking to football clubs.
"We will let him go but he's on a 12-month rolling contract so if he moves someone will have to buy him out of his final year.
"We are still friends, we will always be good friends and he will always be a friend of Wigan Athletic."
Whelan said the club's relegation had been the main factor in Martinez's decision to seek a new challenge.
"He does not feel he is up to the task of getting us back into the Premier League," added the Wigan chairman.
"Football is football and I understand where he is coming from.
"Everton are a nice club and have a great chairman in Bill (Kenwright) and he is an honest man."
Whelan had hoped to hang to Martinez after the pair met on Thursday and the Spaniard had made certain requests about improving the club's training ground and youth development.
That appeared to put the ball in the chairman's court but having had the weekend to think about things Martinez decided he could not continue.
But he will leave with no hard feelings on either side, especially after giving the club their moment of glory at Wembley by beating Manchester City in the FA Cup final earlier this month.
"It is remarkable what he has done for Wigan," added Whelan.
"He kept us in the Premier League up to this season and won the FA Cup - what more could he do?
"We have had great success together and we will always be friends for life - I have great respect for him."
The task is now to find the right candidate to guide Wigan back to the Premier League, which many believe will be a difficult job in itself.
Whelan insists he does not have anyone in mind and encouraged interested parties to get in touch.
"I'm looking for applications for our (new) manager," he said.

Roberto Martinez has been heavily backed to be the next manager of Everton following confirmation of his desire to leave Wigan. Roberto Martinez: Odds'on for Everton job Toffees chairman Bill Kenright is believed to have asked his Latics counterpart Dave Whelan for permission to speak to the Spaniard, with relegated Wigan reluctant to stand in his way of a route back into the Premier League.
Martinez was evens to replace David Moyes at the beginning of the day, but an influx of hefty bets on Tuesday afternoon saw his price cut to 1/3, with previous second favourite for the role, Neil Lennon, now out to 16/1.
Sky Bet's Chris Spicer said: "His departure from Wigan had been on the cards ever since their relegation was confirmed, and we've taken bets on him getting some of the biggest jobs in football in Chelsea (50/1) and Manchester City (66/1).
"However, it's unlikely Martinez will be plying his trade in the Champions League next season, with Everton looking the most likely to give him a well-deserved chance at a club at the right end of the Premier League."
The former Swansea boss is also thought to be on the radar of Stoke, who are in the process of interviewing for their managerial vacancy, and he's 5/1 to take charge at the Britannia Stadium, but the Potters are expected to offer Mark Hughes (1/3) the job.

Are you taking the p*ss,Mikey?I was hoping for Vitor Periera or Jorge Jesus, however Martinez would be preferable to an internal appointment.Obviously there are concerns regarding his defensive set ups, but with all respect to Wigan, the defensive personnel at Everton is certainly stronger. Should Martinez be appointed then it is less of a risk than when David Moyes was originally appointed, at there respective stages of their careers. Also he has the kudos of rejecting the kopites last season.

Bill Kenwright says there is no front-runner for the Everton manager's job as he prepares to meet Roberto Martinez.
Martinez has been given permission to leave Wigan this summer and is due to discuss the possibility of succeeding David Moyes at Goodison Park.
Sky Bet make him an odds-on favourite for the post, but Everton chairman Kenwright insists the Spaniard's name is just one on a list of candidates drawn up with the help of the club's supporters.
He said: "I will meet Roberto in the next 48 hours and he's on the list, as I've always said. No more than on the list.
"I said we'd be making a list, and Evertonians have been great as I indicated I thought they would be.
"They've certainly bombarded me with their thoughts and they're not a million miles away from mine.
"You always get the odd one that thinks he's got the only idea, and there are a few plumbers and electricians who think they can manage Everton, but in the main Evertonians and myself are sort of on the same page.
"The most gratifying thing is 90 per cent of them said 'you didn't let us down last time, go with your gut instinct and hopefully you'll get it right again'.
"There's no way I or anyone can say 'we'll get the right man' but I certainly will put everything into getting it right and getting the right DNA for Everton Football Club. That's very important."
Pressed on whether Neil Lennon, Malky Mackay or Michael Laudrup were potential targets, Kenwright said: "There is a list. No favourite - not at this moment."
