TAKEN FROM THE GREYHOUND STAR WEBSITE TUESDAY 15-12-20::: greyhoundstar.co.uk/greyhound-trainers-association-wound/...GREYHOUND TRAINERS ASSOCIATION IS WOUND UP... The Greyhound Trainers Association (GTA) has been wound up.
Committee member Keith Allsop said: “It was inevitable once the GBGB took away our annual grant of £5,000. It was costing £1,500 in insurances just to keep going.
“GBGB have got what they want. They came up with an alternative to sit on the board in Peter Harnden, not that I have any personal problem with Peter. But I think it is a huge pity that they have managed to divide trainers and take away their voice.
“I really do fear for this industry unless more notice is taken of trainers. At one stage I had 26 dogs, all open racers, but I don’t own one any more. All the enjoyment has gone from the game. I could afford it, but others can’t. You look what is happening to open racing, with very few one-off races. Not being able to get trials. It will kill the game off.”
The GTA was created by an amalgamation of a private trainers organisation with contract trainers in 1965. It was led for many years by John Coleman and later John Haynes.
The last chairman of the organisation, Ricky Holloway, swept to power with a 181-61 majority over John Simpson in 2012. However following an outburst on RPGTV, and the threat of legal action from four GBGB directors, Holloway was forced into a climb down. Within days, it was announced that he would no longer take the place of the ‘practitioner director’ on the Board. There have been no GTA elections since that date.
The trainers representative on the Board, Peter Harnden said today: “I won’t be commenting on anything to do with the GTA, other than to say that I will continue to represent all greyhound trainers, whether they are former GTA members or not. This is a very difficult time for the industry and trainers voices must be heard.”
The GTA have traditionally staged the Annual Trainers Meeting early in the new year for the top six most successful handlers. In recent years it has been staged at Sheffield and sponsored by the stadium and feed manufacturers GAIN Nutrition.
Their spokesman Sean Traynor said: “As far as I am concerned, we would continue to sponsor the event, along with Sheffield, next year. However, in my opinion, it would be unfair to ask Sheffield to commit to that at this stage, until at least they could be sure of crowds being allowed back into the stadium.”

...GBGB Announces 2021 Greyhound Derby Panel.. The Greyhound Board of Great Britain (GBGB) is today announcing the panel that will decide the venue for the 2021 English Greyhound Derby.
Three stadia – Central Park, Nottingham and Towcester – have submitted expressions of interest in staging the annual event and are now required to submit detailed proposals by 28th December. The panel’s role will be to judge the suitability of these bids, with the successful stadium expected to be announced on 31st December.
The Derby panel will comprise:
John Coleman, GBGB Owners’ Representative;
Kevin Hutton, Professional Trainer (in lieu of Trainers’ Representative Peter Harnden, who will not be involved due to his attachment to Nottingham Stadium);
Steve Fluin, Head of the Champagne Club Syndicate;
Mark Moisley, GBGB Commercial Director;
Peter Cadman, Chair of the Greyhound Regulatory Board.
GBGB Quality Manager Amanda Duplock and Senior Stipendiary Steward Paul Illingworth will also be in attendance during the panel’s meeting to advise on regulatory matters and open race planning.
Criteria used to assess the bids will include: ease of access for trainers, owners and spectators; crowd capacity; experience for owners; financial guarantees and sponsorship partners. Stadia have also been asked to submit proposed dates and levels of prize money as part of their proposals.
GBGB Commercial Director Mark Moisley, said:
“As the pinnacle of the greyhound racing calendar, we are very much looking forward to seeing the detailed Derby submissions put forward by stadia in just under two weeks’ time. Following what was a different, but still very special, occasion this year due to the Covid-19 restrictions, we remain hopeful that the 2021 event will be able to run in near-normal circumstances now that a vaccine roll-out is underway nationwide.
“What is clear, however, is that the Derby represents the best and brightest talent from across our industry and we are confident that whichever stadium is chosen will once again do justice to the event on behalf of all our trainers, owners and fans everywhere.”

SUNDAY 20th DECEMBER 2020:::
The GBGB has studied the latest government advice on areas that have now entered Tier 4 restrictions and remain confident that racing behind closed doors can continue at those tracks affected by the higher restrictions. This will also include for now, open racing.
Commenting on the latest government advice, GBGB Managing Director Mark Bird said, “We need to remember that these restrictions relate to a variant strain of the Covid virus. The variant is said to have a transmission rate 70% higher than that of the original. I would ask all stadia staff, trainers and their staff to remain vigilant as to their social distancing at all tracks and to maintain strict levels of PPE. Whilst it is very important for us all to keep working, we must be mindful that the current situation with the virus is fast-moving and we will need to constantly review our operational plan in line with government advice.”
