Experienced racing manager Daniel Rankin is set to join HoveRankin set to swap Shawfield for HoveBY JONATHAN KAY OF THE RACING POSTDANIEL RANKIN is set to take over as Hove racing manager next month so ending a long association with Shawfield.
Ian Smyth, director of stadia for Ladbrokes Coral, said: “It's not all confirmed yet but we've got a provisional agreement for Daniel to join in mid-September and he's coming down next week to finalise everything.
“I'm delighted as Daniel is just what Hove needs in terms of having great experience and being a strong manager who will be joining what is already a very good team.”
The imminent appointment of Rankin ends a near three months search for Hove after it was announced that current racing manager Jeff Piper was to step back from heading the team although remaining at the track.
For his part, Rankin said: “It's a big move and one I'm not making lightly as it means uprooting a young family.
“It's going to be a wrench leaving Shawfield after 16 years but this is a fantastic opportunity and I'm looking forward to what will be a big challenge."

New Hove RM Daniel Rankin revealed the track's plans for a new standard tripHove opt for change with new 500m standard tripBY JONATHAN KAY OF THE RACING POSTHOVE is to introduce a new 500m distance which will be used for all four-bend graded races as the 490m trip brought in last December has proven operationally difficult due to the graded strength being split between it and 515m.
Introduced as a less demanding distance than the tough former standard of 515m, there has been a mixed reaction to 490m racing, and new racing manager Daniel Rankin, who made the move from Shawfield earlier this month, has decided to act.
“There's no doubt the 490m was brought in for the right intentions,” he said. “But it's led to a very confused graded situation with two four-bend distances as we've still been using the 515m trip.
“As a result there are some real imbalances in terms of what seeds are available for the various grades and it will simplify things enormously by having all our four-bend graded races over 500m.
“I've canvassed the opinions of our trainers who have all been in favour so we are going to press on as quickly as possible, hopefully by the end of the year.
“We will maintain the one winning line so the 500m start will have a set of traps ten metres further back than the 490m distance, which we will still keep but for open-racing only although 475m will now be scrapped.
“The Winter Derby will now be over the new 500m which feedback suggests will be popular with that longer run to the first bend, while our other big four-bend competitions, the Sussex Cup and Olympic, will stay over 515m which definitely has a place as it's such a spectacle."

Hove are to introduce their new 500 metre race distance – an amalgamation of the 490 and 515 metre distances – with a special A1 graded race on Tuesday worth £200 to the winner.
Stadium manager Brian Murphy said: “The traps are in position. We will have trials over the new distance on Monday but the first race over the 500 metre course will be an A1 worth £200 (from £150). It is not a one-off, all future A1s will carry the same money. If all goes to plan, it should set up a new track record that might take a few races to challenge it.”
Hove’s recently expanded restaurant will be tested to capacity with three of the four Saturdays leading up to Christmas already booked out. As for Boxing Day. . .
Murphy said: “We have extended the restaurant from 300 to 460. That is already sold out with 150 enquiries standing by as reserve. It promises to be a special meeting with lots going on for the whole family including a significant raffle (see advert below)”
One further date for the diary – New Years Day. The track will be opening the restaurant for the regular Wednesday lunchtime/afternoon fixture with a ‘family roast’ topping the menu. Bookings currently being taken.
New Racing Manager Daniel Rankin opted to transfer the track’s open race competitions to Saturday evenings with the Coral Greyhound Olympic over the traditional 515m course due to be contested over December Saturdays 14th, 21st and 28th.
Each Saturday meeting until the end of the year is being extended to 14 races to conclude with a post meeting disco.

Hove and Monmore announced as 2020 and 2021 TV Trophy Venues
GBGB are pleased to announce that the venues for the 2020 and 2021 TV Trophy have now been set with Hove confirmed for 2020, and Monmore to stage the long-distance classic the following year.
A panel of industry representatives comprising GRB Chair Peter Cadman (Chair), ORCP members Nathan Corden and Dave Perry, trainers’ representative Peter Harnden and prominent owner Nic Brereton, reviewed and approved each proposal.
The 2020 TV Trophy will be sponsored by Coral and staged over Hove’s 945m trip, with three heats and a final provisionally set to take place alongside the semi-finals and final of the Sussex Cup in late July. The historic event will be returning to the south coast for the first time in over 50 years when Spectre II won for Sheffield trainer Jim Hookway in 1967 after finishing runner up to litter brother Tric Trac in the English Derby at White City that same year.
The 2021 Ladbrokes sponsored TV Trophy at Monmore will be staged over 835m with dates to be confirmed as part of 2021’s scheduling process; it is also intended to be staged in mid-summer. The Wolverhampton venue has hosted the TV Trophy four times since its inauguration, with most recent winner, Mark Wallis’s Blonde Reagan, joining a roll of honour that includes the inimitable Scurlogue Champ.
Winners of both the 2020 and 2021 renewals will receive £10,000, runners up £1,000 and others £500.
Racing Committee Secretary Amanda Duplock said:
“Crayford and Romford have done a fantastic job of staging the TV Trophy for the last two years with both events featuring top class fields and finals. We’re extremely grateful to Coral and Ladbrokes for coming forward once again to back this key event in the calendar, and to Hove and Monmore for taking up the baton. The GBGB Racing Committee’s aim was to see the event take place at different types of tracks around the country to give a range of greyhounds and their connections an opportunity to participate – the venues for 2020 and 2021, and the last two years will achieve that goal.”
Ladbrokes Coral Director of Stadia Ian Smyth said:
“We are delighted to have secured the TV Trophy for a further two years having had two special nights at Crayford & Romford in the first two years of our sponsorship. Hove & Monmore will present a different challenge for what is a top quality stayers division. With the timings we hope to create two special summer nights alongside the Sussex Cup in 2020 & the Monmore Summer Festival in 2021 and I am again grateful to my parent company GVC for their ongoing levels of commitment and sponsorship they continue to afford to our four tracks”
Dates will be confirmed for both events as part of each year’s major race scheduling with full details appearing in the Calendar in due course.
