NEWINN JACKO, owned by the Gaskin Greyhound Partners and trained by Ernie Gaskin, came through to win a thrilling albeit bunched Ladbrokes Puppy Derby final over 480m at Monmore.
He overcame an apparently tricky trap three slot by leading off the last bend, beating John Mullins’ kennelmates Fantastical and Swift Lettuce into second and third.
The latter had held his position from trap one into the opening bend, pushing favourite Queen JessieJ wide and the resulting crowding threw the race wide open.
Droopys Premier, last going into the turn, found himself in front down the back, taking them along to the last bend before tiring.
Newinn Jacko, a July 18 whelp, then scored by a length in 28.72sec to take the £12,500 prize - one of the key puppy events of the racing year but, as it stands, one of the last opens to be staged until the current emergency subsides.
Gaskin, especially delighted after Roman Empire’s unlucky defeat in the same final last year, said: “I’m just so grateful to Monmore and Ladbrokes that the race went ahead. He’s only had the eight starts for us - these were all at Monmore and he ended up taking his chance well. It is such an exciting moment.”
Tony Williamson, Monmore’s racing manager, said: “Jacko is a great dog and that was a determined performance that proved he could do it from behind too. There was a freezing cold wind and the track is slow, but Ernie made this final his plan and it’s worked out. Our congratulations to him.”
Williamson added: “There’s a fantastic feeling of camaraderie between everyone in terms of keeping the show safely going on. This reflects well on all involved and especially the sport of greyhound racing - I’d like to express my thanks to all involved.”

Ian Smyth, the track controller for Crayford, Hove, Monmore and Romford has confirmed that his company is to pay an £1 per dog, per day, to trainers to assist during the Coronavirus outbreak.
The funding will be in addition to the GBGB pledged offer.
Smyth said: “It is for all dogs in the kennel, not just racers. Looking to support those independent ‘retireds’ who are in danger of being forgotten about.”
