DROOPYS ADDITION took advantage of trap one to land the £2,500 Ladbrokes Trafalgar Puppy Cup in style at Monmore.
Trained privately by Ernie Gaskin, the May 18 whelp by Droopys Jet out of Droopys Hilda, broke well then hugged the fence as he kicked away at the opening turn.
Tony Willamson, Monmore’s racing manager, said afterwards: “It was a great run from a really impressive youngster to lead the field at the first bend clocking a 28.05sec on going 0.30sec slow - 27.75sec. Favourite Antigua Breeze broke well and was slightly crowded at the first but Droopys Addition pulled away to win by four and a half lengths - a worthy winner of the 2019 running of the prestigious Trafalgar Cup.”

Hove and Monmore announced as 2020 and 2021 TV Trophy Venues
GBGB are pleased to announce that the venues for the 2020 and 2021 TV Trophy have now been set with Hove confirmed for 2020, and Monmore to stage the long-distance classic the following year.
A panel of industry representatives comprising GRB Chair Peter Cadman (Chair), ORCP members Nathan Corden and Dave Perry, trainers’ representative Peter Harnden and prominent owner Nic Brereton, reviewed and approved each proposal.
The 2020 TV Trophy will be sponsored by Coral and staged over Hove’s 945m trip, with three heats and a final provisionally set to take place alongside the semi-finals and final of the Sussex Cup in late July. The historic event will be returning to the south coast for the first time in over 50 years when Spectre II won for Sheffield trainer Jim Hookway in 1967 after finishing runner up to litter brother Tric Trac in the English Derby at White City that same year.
The 2021 Ladbrokes sponsored TV Trophy at Monmore will be staged over 835m with dates to be confirmed as part of 2021’s scheduling process; it is also intended to be staged in mid-summer. The Wolverhampton venue has hosted the TV Trophy four times since its inauguration, with most recent winner, Mark Wallis’s Blonde Reagan, joining a roll of honour that includes the inimitable Scurlogue Champ.
Winners of both the 2020 and 2021 renewals will receive £10,000, runners up £1,000 and others £500.
Racing Committee Secretary Amanda Duplock said:
“Crayford and Romford have done a fantastic job of staging the TV Trophy for the last two years with both events featuring top class fields and finals. We’re extremely grateful to Coral and Ladbrokes for coming forward once again to back this key event in the calendar, and to Hove and Monmore for taking up the baton. The GBGB Racing Committee’s aim was to see the event take place at different types of tracks around the country to give a range of greyhounds and their connections an opportunity to participate – the venues for 2020 and 2021, and the last two years will achieve that goal.”
Ladbrokes Coral Director of Stadia Ian Smyth said:
“We are delighted to have secured the TV Trophy for a further two years having had two special nights at Crayford & Romford in the first two years of our sponsorship. Hove & Monmore will present a different challenge for what is a top quality stayers division. With the timings we hope to create two special summer nights alongside the Sussex Cup in 2020 & the Monmore Summer Festival in 2021 and I am again grateful to my parent company GVC for their ongoing levels of commitment and sponsorship they continue to afford to our four tracks”
Dates will be confirmed for both events as part of each year’s major race scheduling with full details appearing in the Calendar in due course.

TRAINER CHANGES AT MONMORE Monmore go into 2020 with three new trainers, though none will be unfamiliar to Wolverhampton regulars.
The retirement of Sandra Ralph will see her assistant Chris Fereday take over the contract with Sandra becoming his assistant.
Sandra has had a long and successful career the highlights being the 1998 Laurels with Ardant Jimmy, the Produce Stakes win and Scottish Derby runner-up spot for Robbie De Niro. She also had an English Derby semi finalist with Coney Grand.
RM Tony Williamson said: “Sandra’s career began here many years ago working as a kennel girl for Eddie Bamford.
“They kennel had runners at both Monmore and Willenhall and Sandra was telling me that they used to transport the dogs to the track in a huge fan. There were no cages, the staff sat in the back with the dogs on leads.
“She then worked for Jack Simpson before taking over herself. She was here for many years, transferred to Perry Barr, and came back four years ago.
“Chris started out with the Bucklands, went to work for his aunt Sue Whitehouse and then for Gary Hodson at Hall Green, so he has certainly served his apprenticeship.”
In another generational changing of the guard, Aaron Dunne takes over from mum, Pam Burford.
Tony said: “Pam has been here since July ’10, both training and breeding and Aaron has been a significant part of everything that has happened. He has a great work ethic and will be good to have another younger trainer on the strength.”
The third new name on the racecard will be Jayne Meek, currently at Perry Barr and wife of double Derby winning trainer Tony.
Williamson said: “Tony was here many years ago of course and knows the place well. Jayne will be bringing a decent kennel strength of around 25 dogs.”
No track has received more plaudits from top trainers in recent weeks than Monmore.
But despite the significant progress that has been made on the running surface, in May, the circuit is scheduled for an upgrade similar to those at Romford and Crayford.
Tony Williamson said: “We are still finalising the exact details but we are likely to be closed for a week in the middle of the month.
“It is true that the surface has probably never been more consistent in recent months. Basically, Ian Smyth ((Ladbrokes Coral Head of Stadia), suggested a new preparation routine that seems to have made a huge difference.
“But it isn’t just on the track. There have been all kinds of improvements and suggestions for changes in working practices that have made such a difference. There is such a positive attitude around the place.”
In the racing office, the departure of Paul Johnson has seen Steve Rollinson promoted to Acting Deputy Racing Manager.
Williamson said: “Steve started in the paddock, worked his way through racing office admin and will now be my assistant. We also have some younger blood in the office in Maggie and Jake who are both so enthusiastic and are now acting assistant racing managers.”
Lee Field enjoyed a successful first year as a Monmore trainer by heading the graded winners table. His tally, as of today, is 383. The order then goes: 364 Brian Thompson, 336 Stuart Buckland, 296 Kim Billingham, 290 Paul White.
