ALLOWDALE BRUNO once again showed how much Sunderland suits when winning the third semi-final of the Ted Lloyd Classic over 450m at the Wearside track as ante-post favourite Roxholme Nidge crashed out on Wednesday night, writes Jonathan Kay.
Harry Williams’ reigning champion was flat footed at the start but paced up really well to turn behind early leader Bramble Milburn and went on at halfway.
Roxholme Nidge, so impressive in round one, was moderately away and forced to check at the first bend after which it was an uphill battle to qualify and a hopeless one after third bend trouble.
By that stage, Allowdale Bruno was in command and went on to comfortably hold strong-finishing Strides Farran by just over a length in 26.90sec for a seventh victory in nine 450m open starts at the track.
Angela Harrison dominated the other two semis, taking both including a one-two in the second courtesy of Droopys Trapper and Droopys Nadal.
Droopys Trapper lived up to his name and quickly asserted with Ballyrobin Reno chasing hard for a long way before being outstayed by Droopys Nadal for the second qualifying position late on albeit three lengths behind the 26.71sec winner.
Harrison’s heavily-supported Velvet Juliet justified the market confidence when turning the opening semi into a procession.
She was quickly in command and went ok to score by nearly five lengths from Jaguar Jack in a very smart and best-of-event 26.50sec.
Brian Stuart’s Coal Butler (15.68sec) and Bill Finley’s Black Olive (39.31sec) were quickest in heats of sprint and 640m competitions respectively.

Sunderland greyhound stadium Sunderland (above) hosted a memorable Velvet Juliet victorySunderland Classic sees Velvet Juliet catch Bruno....VELVET JULIET ran a race and a half to defeat defending champion Allowdale Bruno in the final of the 450m Ted Lloyd Classic at Sunderland on Wednesday night, writes Jim Cremin of the Racing Post..
One of three runners owned by the Conlon Family and trained by Angela Harrison, Velvet Juliet broke in front but Harry Williams' Allowdale Bruno, showing great pace up and running a truly superb first bend, took charge at the second turn.
When Velvet Juliet showed at the third but was crowded, it seemed all over, but no, she came again on the run in to get up by nearly two lengths in 26.70sec.
Ian Sutherland, part of team Harrison, said: “She’s such a game bitch.”
Jimmy Wright, partner of Angela Harrison, is now looking at Monmore’s six bends for her and the Ladbrokes Summer Stayers Classic there - which starts on Saturday week.
Neil Conlon, one of the most influential owners in the sport, was delighted by the success and warmly thanked the sponsors for putting the event on. “It’s absolutely fantastic,” he said.
His Droopys Trapper was also a gallant third after walking out of the boxes.
Earlier Brian Stuart’s odds-on Coal Butler showed a good burst of pace in the sprint final to take control at the first bend, scoring by over two lengths in 15.75sec,
Calazaghe Gerant (27.10sec) then ran well for Ted Soppitt to win the 450m Warmseal Maiden final. Bliss had led up with Calzaghe Gerant taking a baulk at the first bend, before kicking on at the third to end an unlucky spell.
Harry Williams was pleased when Pond Adonis landed the Marston Stayers final over 640m thought was fortunate when fast up outsider Jaguar Zakarin badly hampered favourite Droopys Life at the first turn.
Pond Adonis squeezed through on the rails, then kicked clear at the second, clocking 39.15sec
