DROOPYS VERVE was an emphatic winner of the third semi-final of the RPGTV Scottish Derby over 480m at Shawfield on Saturday although there was a sting in the tale when he then drew five in next Saturday’s £20,000 decider, writes Jonathan Kay.
Angela Harrison’s dog was a little flat-footed at the start but quickly recovered and was able to force through in the inside at the opening turn where Bramble Reggie did the prominent King Turbo no favours trying to cut across him.
Droopys Verve was well in command along the back with the only question who would claim the second qualifying position, that prize going to local Greenwell Jean who just shaded Bramble Reggie by a neck albeit six and a half lengths behind the 29.02sec winner.
Harrison’s Droopys Nadal got the run of the race when it mattered to take the opening semi.
Boylesports Xtra once again pinged out but was challenged on both flanks along the back, shutting the door on Braveheart Bobby on his inside at the third but allowing Droopys Nadal past on the outside.
He needed no second invitation and went on to beat a rallying Braveheart Bobby by one and a half lengths in 29.24sec with Boylesports Xtra eliminated in third after seemingly being distracted at the final turn.
Graham Rankin’s Jaguar Jack ensured further ‘home’ representation in the final when taking the second semi.
The inside draw definitely helped as the 8-1 chance forced his way round in front at the first bend and went on to beat Cooneen Jack by two and a half lengths in a best-of-night 28.98sec.
Conversely Droopys Expert was eliminated in fourth after a troubled run, his fate sealed when short of room as he made progress into the third bend.
David Templeton’s Millhouse Tommy (4-1) foiled a gamble on Gazilly Shay when coming from last to first to take the opening heat of the RPGTV 500.
Killure Murry set the pace but favourite backers looked good to collect when Gazilly Shay hit the front on the run for home only for Millhouse Tommy to pounce later still and score by nearly two lengths in 30.42sec.
Willie Hyslop, who won the Kirby Memorial at Limerick as an owner seven days earlier with Toolmaker Josie, was on the mark in heat two with Toolmaker Jet.
And again favourite backers suffered as the 4-1 chance ran down market leader Velvet Juliet late on, the jolly having gone clear only to succumb close home by a short-head in 30.23sec.
Ballymartin Hero showed his rivals a clean pair of heels in heat three and Gary Carmichael’s dog was never threatened, going on to beat Droopys Live by two and a half lengths in 30.40sec.
Saturday’s finals - RPGTV Scottish Derby: 1 Cooneen Jack, 2 Greenwell Jean, 3 Braveheart Bobby, 4 Jaguar Jack, 5 Droopys Verve, 6 Droopys Nadal (m).
RPGTV 500: 1 Toolmaker Jet, 2 Droopys Live, 3 Ballymartin Hero, 4 Velvet Juliet, 5 Millhouse Tommy (m), 6 Gazilly Shay (w).

Don?t swerve Verve now it really counts in the Scottish DerbyBY JONATHAN KAYDROOPYS VERVE is not ideally drawn in five – even though it is a box from which he has a good record – but Angela Harrison’s star is still clearly the one to beat in the £20,000 RPGTV Scottish Derby final over 480m at Shawfield (9.20, live on Racing Post Greyhound TV).
Unbeaten in the event, as is respected up-and-coming kennelmate Droopys Nadal, the selection has looked suited to the inside draw in both rounds to date and will not want to be tardy at the start lest he finds a wall of dogs on his inner at the opening turn.
However, there could be a general bunching of the other railers, with Cooneen Jack favouring a middle course from one and Jaguar Jack possibly tending rails from four, so the way could be set fair for last year’s Towcester Derby runner-up to turn handy at worst then open up in style along the back.
Millhouse Tommy put in an incredible display to come from last to first in the heats and David Templeton’s dog looks value to follow up in the RPGTV 500 final at 8.26.
His was, unsurprisingly, the slowest of the three winning times but the manner of victory was striking and he can again pounce late in a contest where Ballymartin Hero, a very reasonable shout for fastest sectional in that special market, can stretch the field.
John McLachlan’s Nadurra Dutch is the class act in a 480m open at 8.10 and can safely navigate a hazardous draw in four. He has won four of his eight opens and the fact he only started 2-1 against Droopys Verve in a Scottish Derby first-round heat speaks volumes in the context of the task he faces this evening.
THE Saturday RPGTV Flying Four selections, all at Shawfield, are Nadurra Dutch (8.10), Millhouse Tommy (8.26), Killieford Banjo (8.59) and Droopys Verve (9.20).
Hills go 125-1 that all four Flying Four selections oblige. A non-runner in any of the races will see successful bets settled as an SP accumulator.
