Team Keightley boosted by Boyo....
ON the day the imminent winding down of her training operation was announced, Hayley Keightley took star billing in Thursday's heats of the RPGTV All England Cup over 480m at Newcastle courtesy of a tremendous front-running performance from Hiya Boyo, writes Jonathan Kay of the Racing Post...
A big ante-post gamble when markets first opened, he was sent off 10-11 for heat four and, although out-trapped by Droopys Nadal, beat that rival to the bend and into a lead he never looked likely to relinquish.
At the winning line, he remained over three lengths to the good of that rival in clocking a best-of-round 28.18sec.
Waikiki Lad turned the opening heat into a procession with Ted Soppitt’s dog rebounding from disappointment a week earlier with a runaway success.
Quickly in charge, he pulled away with every stride and eventually scored by nine lengths from outsider Bellebob Zuri in 28.20sec with Liosgarbh Prince short-heading Ballydoyle Blake for the third qualifying position.
Jumeirah Sprite powered to victory in heat three for Debbie Calvert as he backed up fast trial form although the race was marred by a suspected broken hock sustained by Forest Jason when in second.
The Calvert dog did look to have the race in safe-keeping even at that early stage after making the first bend ahead and so it proved as he went on to beat Knockboy Jet by five and a half lengths in 28.29sec.
Heat two was trouble-marred with the pacesetters coming together at the first bend allowing 12-1 outsider Deadly Cyclone to seize the initiative.
Savva Roberts’ dog was strongly pressed by favourite Bower Luke along the back but chopped that rival for room at the third bend and went away to beat staying on Dilly Dilly by four lengths in 28.69sec.
Heat five proved a near-identical re-run of last year’s Northern Puppy Derby final with Angela Harrison’s Levante Beach racing clear early then holding off Look Like Power, who had to check on the run-in as in the December decider, by there-parts of a length in 28.47sec.
Steve Anderson’s Bramble Reggie was none well away in the finale but the odds-on favourite paced up well to lead at the first bend and was always holding a gallant Bockos Boss as he clocked 28.45sec.
The victory of Waikiki Lad was swift compensation for Soppitt after his exciting prospect Blackstone Milo had ended up on the floor on debut in a hot but messy puppy open won by Kevin Hutton’s Signet Ace in 29.10sec. Fortunately Soppitt was able to give his charge a clean bill of health afterwards.
Angela Harrison’s Waltham Magic continued her brilliant run of form when powering to victory in a 480m bitches’ open in 28.39sec, while Carl Jackson’s Sams Elle made a winning British debut when taking a sprint in 17.10sec.
