Newcastle Greyhound Stadium The gala finals are at Newcastle next Thursday, July 30[/tt] ...All goes wrong at start for eliminated Boyo... THERE was a major shock in the second semi-final of the RPGTV All England Cup over 480m at Newcastle on Thursday night when Hayley Keightley’s ante-post favourite Hiya Boyo (a 2-7 chance on the night) got eliminated.
It all went wrong for him at the start with a slow start and then stumbling slightly. Crowded at the bend, he showed plenty of pace before tiring and getting picked off for second by David Ambler’s Roedhelm Tiger. Boyo missed out by less than a length.
Knockboy Jet (7-1) led and made all here for Scotland’s Gary Ferguson. Roedhelm Tiger, crowded first and second, finished well to go through.
Bramble Reggie (28.50sec) took the first semi for Steven Anderson, holding his position as the field bunched at the bend and then kicked away. Waikiki Lad, involved in the trouble, was second.
Levante Beach’s chance ended when he was left at the start of the third semi. In what proved to be a thriller, Bower Luke led early for Pat Rosney but Debbie Calvert’s Jumeirah Sprite, despite being crowded several times, showed great heart to get up close home by a half length in 28.60sec
In the opening 480m RPGTV Puppy Cup heat Anderson’s Tranwel Stallion showed all round speed and determination to come through in what proved a bunched race after Droopys Impact moved wide from the boxes, taking them along.
Tranwel Stallion then held Acomb Winston by threequarters in 28.76sec. The winner looks progressive.
Nice As Ice made a winning debut for Jimmy Fenwick in heat two, breaking well and pulling clear for an impressive over seven lengths victory in 28.47sec. She is out of the same dam, Bigmans Grainne, as Ice On Fire and has similar dazzling speed to her half-brother.
Incidentally Melanie Fenwick, wife of Jimmy, reported Ice On Fire as responding well to treatment on his injury and a decision is expected in some six weeks about any possible return.
Ted Soppitt’s Blackstone Milo romped heat three, also by over seven lengths, in a night’s fastest 28.35sec. Knocked over on his debut last week, a switch further out to trap five helped. Droopys Delight qualified in second.
Bill Finley’s Black Olive (28.82sec) made a move the other way - to being unseeded - also pay when winning the first heat of the 480m RPGTV Angel Of The North (for bitches), kicking on at half-way. Vatican Saab went up fast, moving off at the first, but Colin Handford’s Easy On then plugged on for second, beaten a length and a half.
Heat two saw a good effort from Steve Rabjohn’s Moanteen Enable. She paced up well but was baulked at the first where Harrison’s Ballymac Berry took over before the Kinsley bitch came again to pull clear on the run in. Greenwell Thea looked unlucky when missing out.
Angela Harrison took the forecast as expected in heat three with Coolavanny Bani (28.48sec) nipping clear at the first bend though her Waltham Magic, the favourite, was forced wide at the bend by outsider Murlens Magda - who ran well. However Waltham Magic just got back to snatch second by a short-head. She was beaten over two lengths by the winner.
In the 290m RPGTV Sprint Cup, Harrison’s Droopys Dazzler took heat one in a fastest 16.75sec, leading at the second after Swift Guard produced good early. Tullig Irish was bumped and fell at the first bend here, but picked himself up.
A winning sequence of seven ended for Cronody Zero in heat two when he totally missed the kick. Murphy led up for Colin Watson but Geelo Coney looked the part when swooping on the run in for Carl Perry. The pup won by threequarters in 16.87sec.
Sams Elle looked good when taking heat three (16.94sec). Carl Jackson’s bitch is unbeaten in two UK starts and was soon well clear, with Colliery Billy nearly three lengths back in second.
