BOWER LUKE, trained by Pat Rosney for owner Tommy Smith, showed his rivals a clean pair of heels to land the £8,000 RPGTV All England Cup over 480m at Newcastle on Thursday, the first Category One final since lockdown ended, writes Jonathan Kay of Racing Post.
Available at 14-1 in the morning, he was well supported through the day to be sent off an 11-2 chance and his backers were always on good terms with themselves after he made a fast start from five.
Favourite Bramble Reggie forced his way round in second after making a moderate start but that only served to make Bower Luke’s advantage more decisive as he was never likely to threaten him and so it proved.
Keeping on much the best of any of his three runs in the event, Bower Luke claimed the title by just over two lengths from Waikiki Lad in a superb 28.23sec with Knockboy Jet taking third ahead of a tiring Bramble Reggie..
Bower Luke had finished runner-up to Ice On Fire in the Laurels final over the course and distance last December and was crediting Rosney with a second win in the All England Cup following Newinn Yolo’s 2014 success.
Rosney said: “He had to do that, his chance was in leading and that’s exactly what he did, there was a little bit of trouble behind him and he slipped the field but he did stay on an awful lot better with each run.
“We’ve always had a lot of faith in him, he came over with a good reputation and has a lot of potential still.”
Swift Guard, who made his name showing electric early pace in the Northern Puppy Derby last December, went from the front to claim the RPGTV Sprint Cup final over 290m at odds of 8-1.
Stephen Atkinson’s dog was pushed to the line by Geelo Coney but had just enough in hand to hold on by a head in 16.80sec with odds-on Droopys Dazzler only fifth for Angela Harrison whose night was to get a lot better.
Her Droopys Delight was another surprise 8-1 winner in the RPGTV Puppy Cup as she capitalised on a fast start while market principals Blackstone Milo and Nice As Ice were modestly away and never got competitive.
Up front, Droopys Delight was chased hard by Acomb Winston, backed at big odds during the day, throughout but was never threatened as she came home four and a half lengths to the good in 28.59sec.
And Harrison then sent out a one-two in the final of the RPGTV Angel Of The North courtesy of Waltham Magic (2-1) and Coolavanny Bani.
Another Harrison runner, Ballymac Berry, led to halfway but Waltham Magic had turned in a great pitch and powered past, going away to beat Coolavanny Bani by just over two lengths in an excellent 28.28sec.
There were one-off wins for Harrison’s Levante Beach who again narrowly saw off old foe Look Like Power and kennelmate Droopys Nadal, Pat Flaherty’s Greenwell Thea and Greenwell Jet plus Gary Ferguson’s Zeno.

Newcastle BGBF Events Now Confirmed!A great night for British Breeders in the North is planned for Thursday 15 October at Newcastle when we will see the Finals of two competitions sponsored by the British Greyhound Breeders’ Forum, plus four supporting BGBF races for British Breds! Centre stage will be the Final of the BGBF Northern Maiden Standard, a Cat 2 worth £3000 to the winner; this competition will be for 36 British breds and six reserves, over 480m, three rounds starting Thursday 1 October. Then there will be the Final of the BGBF British Bred Sprint, a £1500 to the winner Cat 3 over 290m, a two round competition for 18 and three reserves. To make the evening even more special, there will be four supporting races for British breds – a BGBF British Bred Maiden, a BGBF British Bred Standard, a BGBF British Bred Puppy Standard and a BGBF British Bred Bitches Standard – all of them £200 to the winner, others £50. ‘It will give trainers a great boost in this area’ said Newcastle’s Ian Walton. ‘British breeding is strong up here and the spread of competitions on Finals night will give plenty of trainers and breeders something to aim at. We are looking forward to it!’ Chair of the BGBF Liz Mort said ‘Last year we held our first competition at Newcastle – the Cat 1 Northern Plate, which was a great success. This year, with the Covid situation, there is less money in the pot and after discussions with Ian Walton it was decided that this would be the best way to spread the funding. It doesn’t mean our Northern Cat 1 Plate is gone, but it won’t be taking place this year. We are very excited that with Newcastle’s help we will be running these two finals and four supporting races, which we believe will be even more attractive to owners, trainers and breeders of British Bred greyhounds in the North!’

ARC have issued a statement in relation to re-admission of crowds. There are no immediate plans to admit the public to ARC owned tracks: Newcastle, Sunderland, Perry Barr and Nottingham though the company remains in consultation with the respective local authorities. The statement reads:
ARC Greyhound Operations Director, Rachel Corden said, “As across all of our venues, we are keeping a very close eye on Government advice on reopening and admittance of crowds. At our greyhound stadia specifically, we are speaking to the relevant Local Authorities and are hopeful that we will be able to welcome people back through the gates in the very near future. We are also working on special plans for the Greyhound Derby Finals Night at Nottingham, with the aim that we can safely welcome as many people as possible to our feature night.”
“We are particularly looking forward to welcoming greyhound owners back on site and are incredibly grateful for their patience and loyalty throughout this difficult period.”

TAKEN FROM THE GREYHOUND STAR MONDAY 14-9-20:::“We have been liaising with the different Local Authorities for our greyhound stadia and confirm that we will be trialing the return of owners at Sunderland, Newcastle & Nottingham later this week. We cannot currently gain approval to do a trial at Perry Barr, which is in a local lockdown area.
Sunderland will trial an event on Wednesday evening, Newcastle on Thursday evening and Nottingham on Friday evening. Next week we will trial two owner events at each of the three stadia. The Stadia will be communicating with their owners over the coming days to explain the on-line process for booking in, the Covid-19 measures and admissions policy that will be in place for their protection and to safeguard others, and the track & trace system.
We would like to thank our owners for their patience and really look forward to welcoming them back at three of our stadia.”
