Ice On Fire: added Laurels final to his haul at NewcastleCheeseburger reward for ten-up Ice as Levante survives scare....LEVANTE BEACH survived a late scare to maintain his unbeaten record in the event when it mattered most to claim the £8,000 final of the Alconex Northern Puppy Derby over 480m at Newcastle on Thursday, writes Jonathan Kay of the Racing Post..
Angela Harrison’s dog was fast away once again and raced clear but Look Like Power, despite losing ground when diving left from three out of traps, turned close enough to make things interesting.
And make things interesting he did, closing in inexorably from the third bend and looking set to range alongside on the run-in only to find his ground taken by the tiring leader and have to check.
That clinched the deal for Levante Beach who held on by half a length in 28.89sec with rank outsider Liosgarbh Prince running a blinder in third.
“It was a great race,” said Harrison’s partner and assistant Jimmy Wright, “but with the right result!
“Early pace wins races but we were a little worried when the track was watered just beforehand as that can slow it down.
“The Golden Sprint at Romford would be a target for him, how far he’ll stay in summer I don’t know.”
Ice On Fire made it ten in a row when overcoming an early scare to land the £5,000 O’Tooles Gym Byker Laurels final over 480m.
He was comprehensively out-boxed by Droopys Trapper but showed his trademark brilliant early and barged through to lead at the first turn.
In complete control afterwards, Jimmy Fenwick’s superstar came home five and a half lengths clear of Bower Luke in 28.57sec.
“He’s just a magnificent greyhound,” said Fenwick of Ice On Fire, who had been promised his favourite plain cheeseburger from McDonalds by wife Melanie on the way home with this being his final run of the campaign.
As for next year, Fenwick said: “I’d like the Calendar to be sorted so we know what’s on before the Derby which is obviously the main target but the Juvenile would be a possibility.”
Favourites dominated with the first seven up to Levante Beach all winning including Droopys Reel and Velvet Juliet who made it a treble on the night for Harrison.
