TAKEN FROM THE RACING POST FRIDAY 15-9-23...Puppy Cup stars look set to shine at Romford BY Mr PHIL DONALDSON
COMPETITION big guns Droopys Doughnut and Droopys Eddie can pass their first-round tests as the £10,000 Coral Romford Puppy Cup gets under way tonight (live on SIS and Racing Post Greyhound TV).
Having made a shock early exit from Nottingham’s Puppy Classic heats last month, Droopys Doughnut has been prepared for this 400m competition by trainer Patrick Janssens, and after a defeat at the paws of Maxine Locke’s Droopys Eddie, he served a timely reminder of his talents with a blistering 23.70sec success last week.
He does face a dangerous rival in heat four tonight (7.36) in the shape of Angela Harrison’s Newcastle raider Coolavanny Mercy, with the Nottingham semi-finalist running an eyecatching race in defeat here last week, but Droopys Doughnut’s preference for an inside route can see him round the bend ahead and go on to score.
Droopys Eddie looked a Romford natural in qualifying trials and after a debut defeat he confirmed his potential with that victory over Droopys Doughnut, when he stopped the clock at 23.56sec (+20).
That is a serious level of form for one so young and the December pup can show his rivals, including kennelmate Stonepark Champ, a clean pair of heels from trap six in the final eliminator at 8.17.
It has been over ten years since champion trainer Mark Wallis last won this competition with Glanmire Lad in 2012 but he looks to have a potential contender in Cat Island, who runs from trap one at in heat three (7.18).
Richest race on the card is the £500 Romford Friday Night Standard final over 400m at 8.54, where Paul Young’s Bombay Zero – slowest of the three heat winners – looks to have a fantastic make-up as the sole railer.
:: Flying Four picks::
Cat Island T1 Romford 7.18 Droopys Doughnut T2 Romford 7.36 Droopys Eddie T6 Romford 8.17 Bombay Zero T1 Romford 8.54
