...Smooth Velvet shakes the Swindon clock...
VELVET JULIET, a semi-finalist last year, got off to a brilliant start in her second Oaks campaign when running right away with heat two of the Property 192-sponsored bitches’ Classic over 476m at Swindon on Thursday, writes Jonathan Kay of the Racing Post..
Angela Harrison’s bitch put the race to bed out of traps, pinging from five and racing clear to get first run on odds-on Produce Stakes champion Queen Jessiej who had to settle for second, just over five lengths behind the 27.88sec winner (going normal).
The winning time was just two spots outside the track record set by Cadburys Hero just after the redesigned circuit opened in summer 2019.
Harrison also saw Waltham Magic qualify in third behind Velvet Juliet but it was a mixed night for the kennel even allowing for a treble at home track Newcastle as Coolavanny Bani was a shock elimination and Droopys Delight went wrong.
Jim Daly was another to see the highs and lows as first his Ferro Sydney broke down in the third heat won by Barrie Draper’s Ballyboss Con (28.15sec) before Daly’s Droopys Coffee took heat eight in 28.23sec.
Second quickest time of the night came much later in heat 11 where Ernie Gaskin’s Newinn Liz lived up to her brilliant trial stakes form with an emphatic five and a half lengths victory over Popworld in 27.96sec, the path for both having been made significantly easier on the outside when Golden Bid dived sharp left from four out of traps.
Kevin Hutton, who has won the Oaks on both occasions it has previously been staged at Swindon and three in total, put down an early marker this time when his Galloping Moon took the opening heat from the front in 28.43sec.
However, runner-up Swanley Chick was a real eye-catcher on what was her first look at the track, John McGee’s Irish raider missing the break before pacing and running off at the first bend then chasing hard until again getting lost at the final turn.
Hutton completed a double when Lights Out took heat ten, powering past Churchill Dolly at the final turn and going on to beat Dolla Rosie by two lengths in a very smart 28.10sec.
Liz McNair’s British Breeders Stakes winner Queen Dolly crashed out in fourth there having been unable to dominate but the trainer was on the mark earlier when Queen Franklin, fifth behind Bull Run Byte in the final last year, took heat five n 28.47sec.
Mark Wallis sent out a 1-2 in the finale where he had four runners with Aayamza Lexie powering to a five and a quarter lengths win over kennelmate Black Eyed Molly in 28.39sec.
Other heat winners were Tom Heilbron’s Jumeirah Liberty (28.31sec), Pat Godfrey’s Arthur Sprout (28.39sec), Jamie Kingsley’s Ballymac Iona (28.57sec) and Angie Kibble’s Only You (28.64sec).
The Oaks second round is on Monday.
The draw will follow on Friday.
