...Dowling duo deliver with Derby semi-final one-two...
BY PHIL DONALDSON OF THE RACING POST
LIAM DOWLING sent out a memorable one-two in the first semi-final of the Star Sports/TRC Greyhound Derby as his Ballymac Fairone led home fast-finishing kennelmate Ballymac Wild at Towcester on Saturday night.
Breaking smartly from trap four, the winner was soon in command and despite being pursued by Pat Buckley's defending champion Deerjet Sydney down the far side he never looked like surrendering his advantage.
Keeping strong on the run for home, Ballymac Fairone went one spot faster than his previous second-round best as he clocked 29.08sec for the 500m Classic course as he led home the Dowling forecast with Nottingham hero Deerjet Sydney booking his spot in a second final by holding off Peter Cronin's Toolmaker Sydney for third.
Dowling said of his winner: "He's very young but we took a chance as he was doing so well at home and he's cracked out as he like sto do and made all.
"It's fantastic to have two in the final and Ballymac Wild is such a professional. He's dead keen but cool, calm and relaxed. It's so nice to be there now."
Graham Holland's Newinn Session bounced back to form in the second semi-final as he swept to the lead on the run to the first turn to get inside Patrick Janssens' Kilara Lion to take control of the contest.
Keeping up a good gallop the Irish ace, sent off an 8-1 chance, was always holding a gallant Kilara Lion who booked his spot in the final along with his Patrick Janssens-trained kennelmate Thorn Falcon who took third behind the 29.33sec winner and will be the only seeded runner in the final.
Trainer's wife Nicky Holland said of the winner: "That's more like the Session we know. He had to step up to the plate tonight and he has.
"He's come out well from trap one, paced up to the bend and did what he had to do. I'm thrilled with him."
The draw for the Derby final will be made at Monday's Derby lunch.
Cronin's Angry Tornado was quickest of the two RPGTV Derby Plate semi-final winners as he held John Mullins' Fatboyz Storm by a head in 29.46sec with Gemma Evans' Newinn Jacko in third, while Yarmouth trainer Paul Burr enjoyed a memorable one-two in the second semi as his Shelone Milo made all in 29.52sec to hold off kennelmate Swuft Cope by a neck with Paul Young's Bubbly Bollinger also making Saturday's decider.
Greyhound of the Year and Towcester 942m track record holder Aayamza Royale justified cramped odds of 1-7 as she won her heat of the 1st Containers Dorando Marathon in 58.92sec.
Slowly into stride, the Mark Wallis-trained bitch led on the second circuit as she beat Kelly Tobin's Our Supreme Sue by five and a half lengths with early leader Dorando Double claiming third qualifying spot for Patrick Janssens.
That success will set up another clash with Diane Henry's Savana Volcano after the local star, runner-up to Aayamza Royale in the TV Trophy at Monmore in May, had taken the opening heat in a faster 58.51sec as she beat Pat Doocey's 2020 Dorando champion Affirmed by almost five lengths with Simon Harms' Droopys Bird third
The night started with three heats of the RPGTV Notebook ladies in which Lee Field's Luna Rocket (29.29sec) set the standard with a runaway heat two success, beating Evans' Droopys Aoife by seven and a half lengths.
Angie Kibble's Ballymac Intent (29.81sec) took the opener by just under three lengths from Patrick Godfrey's fellow Swindon raider Arthur Pumpkin, while Liz McNair's Queen Dolly was a front-running winner of heat three in 29.35sec as she led home Kevin Boon's Bettys Book by four and a half lengths.
