TOWCESTER is the new venue for the Racing Post Greyhound TV Juvenile with the Derby host to stage the prestigious £5,000 invitation over 500m on Tuesday, April 20.
Traditionally a race where preference is given to the winners of major puppy competitions the previous year or those who performed well therein, the conditions for 2021 have been tweaked to reflect the compressed nature of the calendar post-lockdown and the later date for this year’s running.
Inaugurated at Wimbledon in 1957 as the Greyhound Express Merit Puppy Trophy, it was renamed the Juvenile seven years later and was a staple at Plough Lane right up until the final throes of that track in 2016.
It then moved to Central Park in 2017 when Kevin Boon’s high-class Murrys Act claimed the title followed by a three-year stint at Sheffield culminating in victory for Jimmy Fenwick’s Greyhound of the Year Ice On Fire in 2020.
The switch to Towcester, which joins the RPGTV roster on Tuesdays from the beginning of March, means the Juvenile will once again be staged over the Derby course and distance with its April slot a likely ideal landing ground for those just leaving or having left puppy status with an eye on the premier Classic.
Kevan Moretti, chairman and CEO of Greyhound TV, commented: “RPGTV continues to support the historic Juvenile and we look forward to both its first staging at Towcester but also to Towcester coming on the RPGTV schedule from the beginning of March.”
Towcester promoter Kevin Boothby said: “We’re looking forward to showcasing Towcester to RPGTV viewers from March and we are planning to introduce plenty of new open-race competitions throughout 2021.”
On the Juvenile, Towcester spokesman Nathan Corden added: “The Juvenile is a great race with a tremendous history and some fantastic previous winners.
“We are delighted RPGTV is on board as a sponsor and has chosen Towcester for the race, hopefully we can build the relationship to include other events in the future and be a strong part of our future open-race plans.”
Juvenile invitations will be made by RPGTV with connections interested in running asked to nominate through the Towcester racing office by noon on Tuesday, April 13.
The Juvenile is for greyhounds whelped in August 2018 or younger. Preference may be given to the winners of leading puppy competitions from July 2020 onwards. Greyhounds that competed in the 2020 Greyhound Derby are ineligible.
