STRONG IRISH FEEL TO ENGLISH OAKS Ian Fortune
Skywalker Cilla and Billys Diva will both bid to become the first Irish trained winner of the English Oaks since the Ian Reilly trained Droopys Stacey in 2005 when they line up the final of the classic tomorrow night.
A glance through the previous winners of the famous competition will also confirm that Irish breeding has been dominant in the recent past with the last British bred winner coming way back in 2006 when Dilemmas Flight came home clear.
There will be no British bred winner of the classic in 2021 either, as all six finalists were bred on Irish soil. In fact, with the exception of the defending champion Ballymac Trend, they all began their racing career on these shores.
ANOTHER DROOPYS WINNER WITH SAMANTHA?
The famed Droopys Kennels of Portlaw have bred the winner of the classic on three separate occasions and Droopys Samantha is their hope tomorrow night.
The daughter of Out Of Range began her career at Galway, winning an unraced stake in 28.86 last February.
BIG KEV BIDDING FOR WIN NUMBER FIVE
Anniversary Girl races from trap five and will bid to hand Kevin Hutton a third Oaks win in four years and a fourth in total.
She was bred by Patsy McCusker and debuted in the 2020 Puppy Oaks at Shelbourne Park when trained by Sean Dooley.
RITZY WILL HAVE PLENTY OF SUPPORT
Ritzy Lady completes the line-up and her pedigree will be very familiar to many.
The September ’19 whelp was bred by Una and Pat Creed and won her first two starts around Clonmel. The daughter of Laughil Blake and Galloping Maeve provided her former owners with a real thrill last Thursday, finishing a close second to Billys Diva to claim her place in the decider.
While they may have sold her across the water, the Creeds were absolutely thrilled to see Ritzy Lady, who began her career as Galloping Lupin, progress. It was a good week for the litter as two days earlier, on Tuesday evening, Galloping Tulip looked a real prospect when winning around Shelbourne Park in a fast 28.55.
Pat Creed was flying when we caught up with him, stating on Friday morning, “We’re just down from the ceiling. It was a great run by Ritzy [Lady], just a couple of days after [Galloping] Tulip won so well around Shelbourne. It doesn’t get much better. My granddaughter Beatrice thinks this is easy. It’s great to be young.
“I wish that were true, nothing comes too easy, but it is great to have a few going well. You wait long enough for a good one in this game.”
You most certainly do and we wish all involved in Ritzy Lady and the remaining finalists the very best of luck tomorrow evening. Whatever the result, there is certain to be plenty of smiles on this side of the Irish Sea.
