£12,500 Arc Kent Plate final is next Sunday
HOPES PADDINGTON continues to show he is a seriously good greyhound and powered into the final of the Arc Kent Plate at Central Park on Sunday, writes Paul Brown.
Mark Wallis’s dog, with two Category One successes already in the bag, could not deal with a trap four draw in the Winter Derby final at Monmore, but battled to victory in last week’s heats and the return to trap one allowed him to show his true colours.
Despite a slow start he flew up to the bend, and with odds-on Fromposttopillar bumped back into the pack was gone off the second.
Liz McNair’s star recovered to show his trademark back-straight surge, but was then forced to check at the third turn by Clairekeith Remy and had to settle for third behind the 30.24sec winner, who scored by two and a half lengths from Carl Cardiner’s dog.
Arkady made an even worse start in the second semi but his early speed also got him out of trouble as he matched Hopes Paddington’s time exactly.
David Mullins' Kent Derby winner just got the bend in front, closely pursued by Cochise. He looked beaten off the last as Richard Rees’ strong runner challenged, but just had enough in the tank to hold him by the minimum margin.
The Jenningsbet Maiden final that followed saw Barnhill Jack turn over odds-on Lostrigg Joel to claim the £500 prize.
Dan Brabon’s dog quickly got loose out wide, and with the favourite seeing little daylight in behind, comfortably held Tony Collett’s running-on dog by two and a half lengths in 29.74sec for the 480m trip.
Draw for Sunday’s Kent Plate final: 1 Droopys Google, 2 Hopes Paddington, 3 Clairekeith Remy, 4 Cochise (m), 5 Fromposttopillar (m), 6 Arkady (m).
