.....CROWDS AT YARMOUTH FROM MONDAY.....
TAKEN FROM THE GREYHOUND STAR — JULY 28, 2020
Promoter Simon Franklin said: “Yarmouth Council were entirely comfortable with the plan that we formulated but it also had to be approved by Norfolk County Council. I challenged them that greyhound racing was not an ‘elite sport’ according to the wording of the Government order, so we shouldn’t have to wait until early October. They agreed.
“I accept that it is a grey area, but we think we have right on our sides. There are lots of other businesses attracting crowds; the circus in Yarmouth is already open and there are plenty of people around the town.”
There are a raft of requirements including pre-booking, social distancing and mask wearing, but Franklin is convinced he can make it work.
In terms of the ARC contracted Monday and Wednesday meetings, crowds will be a bonus. But in terms of the Saturday, it will be harder to turn a profit.
Franklin said: “It will cost £3K just for prize money and then there are various booking and restaurant staff. We have quite a spacious restaurant and should be able to seat 190 of the usual capacity of 240. The tables in the bars have been spaced out, and there is also the ‘Yarmouth Bank’ outside.
“I reckon we can cater for between 550-600 people. Last year our Saturday night tote at this time of year was around £17K-£18K. If we can make £10K, then we can break even, so it is worth doing in terms of giving the dogs races and keeping the owners and trainers happy.”

This is great news for the whole of the Greyhound Industry.
Here's hoping all greyhound tracks up and down the country get the green light from there local councils a.s.a.p.

FRIDAY 31-7-20:::
Following the announcement from Boris Johnson today of changes in Coivid-19 restrictions, Yarmouth have decided to cancel their plans for their Monday and Wednesday greyhound meetings next week* as they await further clarification.
Promoter Simon Franklin said: “It is tremendously disappointing. We were fully prepared and were working to near full capacity for the restaurant and looking at a decent overall attendance under the socially distanced restrictions.
“To be honest, I am not sure that we would be in breach if we were to go ahead since our original plan was based on our assertion to the council that we are not an elite sport; which they accepted.
“However, the situation should be much clearer after the weekend as Skegness and Kings Lynn Stock Car meetings are planning to go ahead. Given they are also considered to be ‘grass roots’ too, we will be a lot wiser as to how these restrictions are being interpreted.”
*The Monday and Wednesday meetings will still take place as usual but without crowds.

MONDAY 10th AUGUST 2020::
Yarmouth are fully booked in their restaurant both Monday and Wednesday this week, and almost full for their equivalents next week.
The Norfolk venue were backed by the county and town Council in their interpretation of Government orders on elite sport and have now staged two greyhound meetings and a stock car event with paid attendances within the last week. The motor sport attendance was voluntarily capped at just under 1,000.
Promoter Simon Franklin said: “We could have had 2,000 here to be honest, but didn’t want to force the issue. The council came along and were happy with the controls we had put in place and thankfully it has been quite busy. We can seat 180 in the restaurant on Mondays and Wednesdays and like a lot of places, racegoers have taken advantage of the Government’s ‘eat out’ initiative during the week.
“General admission is £9, and a meal in the restaurant is £23, but take off the tenner and it is great value. The Saturdays haven’t been so busy because the offer isn’t available, though we are looking to see if we can put something on to tempt the diners at the weekend; so there is capacity in the restaurant this coming Saturday.
“General admission has also been quite disappointing and we will lost money last weekend but it is just good to be racing again.”
In addition to the financial benefit of allowing in the crowds, the NCC interpretation of the Covid rules means Yarmouth owners can be present to watch their greyhounds race.
