SIGNET DENVER (9-2 in the morning, SP 11-4) took advantage of trap one to land the £10,000 prize for the Arc Laurels final over 480m at Perry Barr on Thursday.
A main headline winner from Paul Brown in the Racing Post’s Open Check column, the Laurels has a rich history as one of the sport’s traditional Classics. Trained by Kevin Hutton for Tony Brealey, Signet Denver went up nicely to dispute the lead with rank outsider Chelms Yes before edging ahead at the second. He then drew clear off the last turn to win by nearly two lengths in 28.14sec.
Favourite Lautaro ran well after first bend bumping to almost catch Chelms Yes for the runner-up spot. Trionas Travel had a nightmare run after a slow start then getting clobbered and checking very wide at the turn. Aussie Captain and Headford Flash were also crowded there.
British-bred Signet Denver, seen as beaten by a poor trap four draw when favourite in the final of the RPGTV Puppy Derby at Towcester in December, is sure to be a major force in the forthcoming Star Sports/TRC Derby.
His victory is a fillip for Hutton, who seeks to defend his Premier Racing Judgement Night Trainers’ title at Monmore on Saturday - live on RPGTV.
It proved a great night for the Signet litter (Magical Bale-Forest Natalee Jan 2020) as earlier Signet Goofy, a brother to Denver and trained by John Mullins, took the £1,000 Good News At Stud Stakes final over 275m.
He led early and managed to hold kennelmate Ballymac Slapup by half a length in 16.13sec
