TAKEN FROM THE RACING POST WEBSITE:::  Billy KingTributes paid to 'Mr Shawfield', Billy King Shawfield legend Billy King dies, 85 TRIBUTES have been paid to legendary Shawfield promoter Billy King who died on Saturday aged 85, writes Jonathan Kay.
GBGB chief executive Mark Bird said of King’s passing: “Billy bought Shawfield back in March 1987, albeit it was three months later when they ran their first race that June.
"At its height, there was permit racing there two nights a week on a Monday and Friday, with full racing on a Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.
"Shawfield also became the home of the Glasgow Tigers Speedway and the Scottish Claymores American football team.”
Bird added: “I remember being introduced to Billy at Shawfield on a dark rainy October evening. He was running his pitch in the betting ring at Shawfield but immediately Billy stepped down and handed it over to someone else, so that he could walk me around the stadium and to chat.
"It was obvious that Billy understood everything about his track, his trainers and even his punters and I was enthralled by his stories of him growing up in Glasgow, in much different times.
"Billy served as a director on the British Greyhound Racing Board for a number of years. Our thoughts are with Billy’s family at this sad time.”
Robert Lithgow, who had an on-off role at Shawfield where he filled most jobs including a long spell as racing manager, said: "I worked for Billy for more than 40 years and it's really the end of an era.
"He was a massive figure and it's hard to imagine he's not going to be around anymore."
King's son Billy junior said: "I thought he was invincible and would live forever so it's very hard to take in. He went peacefully on Saturday."
Funeral details will be announced in due course.
Shawfield has not raced since the Covid-19 pandemic struck and is not currently expected to reopen. |

ARC/TRP FIXTURES FOR 2023 
A total of 36 fixtures per week will be broadcast to licenced betting offices, equating to more than 1,860 fixtures per year. Four fixtures per week, including a Sunday afternoon, will be broadcast from Central Park, with Kinsley increasing from three to four weekly fixtures. Swindon reduces from five to four meetings.
TRP will, from January 2023, broadcast Friday evening racing from Sunderland, as well as a Saturday evening fixture from Perry Barr.Changes from 2022:Monday: Kinsley is an additional Monday afternoon fixture.
Central Park do not race
Tuesday: Central Park replaces Kinsley morning meeting
Wednesday: Kinsley replaces Swindon morning meeting,
Central Park replaces Sunderland evening
Thursday: Sunderland Newcastle switch fixtures
Friday: Swindon switch morning to afternoon,
Sunderland additional evening meeting
Saturday: Perry Barr switches morning to evening.
Additional Swindon morning
Sunday: Kinsley & Central Park switch afternoon and evening meetings...
