SUFFOLK DOWNS IS LICENSED TAKEN FROM THE GREYHOUND STAR — JANUARY 7, 2022Racing should commence at Britain’s 19th GBGB licenced track as soon as next month with GBGB expected to rubber stamp the application this afternoon
Director of Racing James Chalkley said: “I spoke to Senior Steward Paul Illingworth this morning and he confirmed that our application has been approved. It is literally now just a race against time on a Friday afternoon to issue the licence.”
The circuit previously known as Mildenhall is expected to commence trialing next Wednesday and will ultimately race three times per week.
Chalkley said: “We are playing it by ear at the moment, but we will almost certainly start off with just a single meeting as the strength slowly builds.”
Five of the seven trainers will be either transferring of splitting their kennel strengths with Henlow.
They are Jason Ray, Kirsty Nevin, Mark Wallis, Paul Rea and Marlene Westwood. Paul Philpott will transfer from Towcester plus Jim Daly who, last year, had the largest kennel strength at Crayford....

...Suffolk Downs Granted GBGB Licence... The Greyhound Board of Great Britain (GBGB) is pleased to announce that Suffolk Downs Stadium, formerly known as Mildenhall, has today been granted its GBGB licence to race.
Following a series of in-depth inspections by GBGB, the track has demonstrated that it meets all the necessary requirements to protect the safety and welfare of all racing greyhounds on the site.
As part of the inspection process, the stadium and its equipment were inspected for their suitability and safety, including both its track surface and the kennel and paddock areas. Subject to final GBGB conditions being met, trials are set to begin at the track next week with a view to racing commencing on 1 February 2022.
As a GBGB-licensed stadium, Suffolk Downs will be required to undergo regular surveillance inspections and a full annual certification inspection to ensure that it continues to comply with the GBGB Rules of Racing.
Kevin Boothby, Promoter at Suffolk Downs Stadium, said:
“We are absolutely delighted to have secured our racecourse licence and to have the track shortly reopening. My thanks go out to Paul Illingworth and everyone at the GBGB for their support in getting us up and running, under all the relevant requirements and procedures.
“This year, we also have the reopening of Oxford Stadium on the horizon and we will be submitting our application to the GBGB shortly and begin the inspection process there. It’s been a massive community effort to get the two tracks ready and we cannot wait to get them open and racing again.
“The thing I am most grateful for and proud of is the overwhelming support we have received from across the sport. Resurrecting this track has been a long-standing goal of mine and I hope that it signals that our sport is on course for a very bright 2022.”
Commenting on the news, Phillip Law, GBGB Director of Regulation, said:
“I am pleased to be able to grant Suffolk Downs its GBGB licence today, confirming that the team there has successfully met all the regulatory requirements to operate as a greyhound racecourse.
“Following the challenges of the past two years due to the pandemic, this will no doubt be a real boost for the sport and represents the ambition all of us working in British greyhound racing share for its continued success and popularity.
“GBGB staff will be present throughout the initial weeks of trials to ensure everything continues to run smoothly. We wish the track every success as they take their next steps.”
Mark Peacock, GBGB’s Track Liaison Officer, added:
“I was very impressed with what I’ve seen on a track level at Suffolk Downs and a great deal of effort has clearly been put in place to ensure it is in excellent shape to begin trialling and racing.
“I will be working closely with the ground staff there to ensure these standards are upheld going forward and continue to be improved upon, and I look forward to heading to the track again with STRI for their first visit in the coming week.”

The GBGB’s 19th circuit Suffolk Downs staged its first trial session earlier today. A total of 37 trials took place with three handslips. Director of Racing James Chalkley said: “Everything pretty much went to plan and it was a good session. We had a slight delay to the start because the STRI wanted to make some measurements on the track. We also had one early break to add some more water and there was a minor issue with a hare covering being caught somewhere on the track, but the trials all went well and there were no injuries. “By a strange coincidence, Anne Kirby, who had the last winner at the track when it raced as Mildenhall, had the first trialists.” Paper Straw, one of the best middle distance performers at Harlow set the standard with a 24.48 run but was overshadowed by another dog from the same circuit, Jethro, who clocked 24.40 on better going. Seven trainers sent runners on the day. The next trial meeting will be next Wednesday, to be followed by a Friday session.

Suffolk Downs completed their third trial session today (Wednesday) and are on schedule to stage their first race meeting on Tuesday February 8.
James Chalkley said: “We lost a session through a frozen track but have around 30-40 dogs already qualified and with next week’s Wednesday and Friday sessions, we should have enough for the first meeting. The Monday fixture will follow very soon afterwards with the Fridays, probably by the end of February.”
“We can’t give a definitive starting date until the new cameras have been tested, but February 8 looks highly likely.”
The final schedule seems unlikely to be determined until there is a conclusion to the on-going legal situation at Henlow.

Harlow sub26.00 runner Paper Straw was once again quickest over the standard distance with a 23.92 (-10) run. Grading time is expected to be around 25.50-25.60. The new six bend traps are likely to be fitted next week to provide a 545m option.
