::DAVE LEVY LEAVES GBGB AFTER 13 YEARS:: Dave LevyThe Greyhound Board of Great Britain (GBGB) has announced the departure of Dave Levy who has been its Registrar since 2009. As Registrar, Dave has been responsible for ensuring all stadia and trainers are licensed and that every racing greyhound and owner are registered with GBGB. During his time in the registry office, Dave has worked closely with trainers, owners and racing offices helping them to adhere to GBGB’s Rules of Racing.
Dave has had a long association with greyhound racing having been involved in the sport for over 60 years. Before joining GBGB, Dave held a number of racing office roles at greyhound stadia – most notably Walthamstow Stadium.
Dave was diagnosed with blood cancer in 2021 and has been undergoing treatment. He is now in remission but has decided to take early retirement and relocate to the Essex coast to concentrate on his continued recovery.
GBGB CEO Mark Bird said of Dave’s leaving GBGB:
“It’s been an incredibly tough year for Dave and his wife, Denise, and indeed for the whole of his family. Dave has been an absolute tour de force and loyal servant of GBGB and more widely, for dog racing over many years. He has always demonstrated an enviable work ethic, normally being the first into the office and the last to leave, to ensure that registrations and licences were always dealt with expeditiously. Dave will be sorely missed by his work colleagues but equally he has many friends within the sport who will be keen to stay in touch. My considerable thanks to Dave for his service and we all within the sport wish him well as he continues to get better.”
Commenting on his departure, Dave Levy said:
“I would like to wholeheartedly thank everyone for their help and cooperation over the years. It was a pleasure and honour to work in such a wonderful industry alongside some fantastic people and most importantly the greyhounds themselves.”
Last week, GBGB was pleased to welcome back Tom Huntley as IT Services Manager. Tom briefly left the organisation last year but has returned to take up his role overseeing GBGB’s IT functions.

Hydration of Greyhounds With the hot weather set to continue, GBGB has today issued a reminder to all trainers and tracks to ensure that greyhounds have unrestricted access to clean drinking water at all times.
As those working across the sport will be aware, dehydration in a greyhound is a contributory factor in under-performance, cramping and can cause elevated potassium levels in blood which can increase the risk of heart failure.
Dr Simon Gower, GBGB’s Veterinary Director, said:
“Dehydration is easily avoidable but it is essential that we are all aware of its potential and take the right steps to avoid it. If you are hot, think how your greyhound would be, so encourage plenty of fresh, clean water intake.”
Under the Rules of Racing, tracks must ensure that clean drinking water is always available in the paddock area. Clean drinking vessels should be supplied by either the trainer or the racecourse. A suitable quantity of water (min 500ml) must be placed with the greyhound in its race kennel following its veterinary inspection.
Following its race, each greyhound should be given the opportunity to take clean drinking upon returning to the paddock and a suitable quantity of water should be placed in the kennel with the greyhound when returning to its race kennel.
Fluids must also be freely available to greyhounds before any journey. For journeys longer than three hours, or where the temperatures are above 20°C, a watering stop shall be scheduled into the journey.
Dr Gower added:
“It is essential to carry an adequate supply of water and drinking containers, in case of delay or breakdown. Trainers should also make themselves familiar with the Hot Weather Policy, which can be found within the Rules and Regulation section at http://www.gbgb.org.uk.”
Trainers can apply for GBGB assistance funding towards the cost of providing suitable water bowl holders through the GBGB Trainers’ Assistance Fund and should contact their stipendiary steward for an application form.

Graded Boost as GBGB Announces Owners’ Bonus Series Owners are set for a boost as GBGB today confirmed that each track will be asked to stage three events for greyhounds on their graded strength, between 1st August and December 31st.
The “Owners’ Bonus Series” races, which have been developed by the GBGB Racing Committee, will be funded from money secured by the committee to support racing at graded level. This will enable tracks to each stage two gala meetings (one Summer, one Autumn), across 12 graded races, along with an event in December which will span 30 consecutive races, aimed to benefit as many owners and trainers as possible.
Each event will feature:
Extra prize money of £50 to the winner, and £10 extra to also rans, in addition to the track’s existing prize money for that grade across 12 races. A trophy will be provided for each of the races for the connections of the winning greyhound.
The grades of each event will be determined by the track’s Racing Office depending on dog strength to ensure competitive racing, and to cover as many grades as possible. These races cannot be Opens or Inter Track races, and are not open to greyhounds owned by Racecourse Executives, Track Owners or Senior Management at the same track taking part in the enhanced prize money races. Each event will be held at customer-facing meetings on weekends and evenings to maximise opportunities for owners to attend.
Scott Harvey, Racing Operations Executive for the GBGB said:
“This additional funding towards graded racing is welcomed and will help to provide a highlight at each track in the final quarter. We’ve got a busy schedule of well supported open race competitions throughout the year and this a good opportunity to support and reward racing at a more local level.”
