We are delighted to reveal the signing of Joe Shorrocks on a three-year deal.
The 23-year-old becomes our sixth addition of the off-season, following Nene Macdonald, Ethan Ryan, Cade Cust, Matty Foster and Kai Morgan, through the door.
A product of the Wigan Warriors academy, Shorrocks operates primarily as a loose forward, but is versatile across the entire forward pack.
He made his senior debut in 2019 and has gone on to make 75 appearances for the Warriors over a five-year spell; including short loan appearances for Leigh Leopards and London Skolars.
In 2021, Shorrocks was the Betfred Super Leagueโs Top Tackler (833) and featured in 18 games of Wiganโs title-winning campaign, in 2023.
In reaction to joining the Red Devils, Shorrocks has said: โI am made up to be joining the club.
โEver since I spoke to Paul (Rowley) and Ian (Blease) about coming to play for Salford, it is something that has excited me, and it is a move that I think is best for me at this stage in my career.
โI spoke to a few of the lads that I know there already and they have had nothing but positive things to say about the club, so Iโm really happy to be joining!โ
Head Coach, Paul Rowley has added: โI am delighted to welcome Joe into our group.
โI have enjoyed watching Joeโs progress over the last couple of years and respected his work ethic, and ability. After speaking with Joe, it was clear that his character and ambition are first class, and a perfect fit for our team.
โWe are all looking forward to working alongside Joe and look forward to him pulling on the Salford jersey!โ
Director of Rugby & Operations, Ian Blease has also said: โI am really pleased to secure Joeโs signature.
โHe is a young player, full of talent and we think this group is the perfect place for him to flourish. After speaking to him, I know he will fit seamlessly into the dressing room and provide an excellent option in multiple positions.
โI would like to welcome Joe and his family to the club, and look forward to seeing him in action next year!โ

AN UPDATE ON THE SALFORD STADIUM by Salford Red Devils | Nov 20, 2023.....The club would like to provide an update regarding the Salford Stadium.
Following the statement made by Mayor Dennett last week, on Thursday, a number of meetings were held by the Council in respect to the future of the Salford Stadium. Since the meetings, we have received several updates that we believe are important to share. These include:
A meeting this week between the Council and the RFL to discuss the planned process for stadium acquisition, thus enabling a long-term lease and protecting our pursuit of a Grade A rating in IMGโs grading criteria. A meeting between Sale Sharks, Salford Red Devils and Salford City Council to take place imminently to discuss the rental agreement. Hopeful of a new food & beverage, and car park contract to be completed by the time of acquisition which should enable Salford Red Devils to generate revenue. Further comments have been shared addressing access to various commercial streams, however the timelines for the Club receiving access to these are likely to remain unfavourable given the processes that must first be undertaken. We have received an indication of intent for the acquisition to be complete within the first quarter of 2024.
Whilst we welcome the statement made by Mayor Dennett, as well as the above, we are conscious our position remains a time-sensitive one that is currently without a resolution. Without this materialising imminently, we are only able to assume that we will continue to not have access to the various commercial streams we have operated towards and budgeted for over the coming months.
Our club is more than just a team people watch every other week. Our Club is Salfordโs Club; owned by its community, and consistently here for its community as a source of jobs, education, and health. Mayor Dennett has previously spoken to the importance of Salford Red Devils as a 150-year-old institution of Salford, and despite previous experiences, there is a wholehearted belief that the Council will come through.
However, as the end of our current tenancy agreement is imminent, we remain aware that any further inaction could place this at risk.
We are optimistic following recent discussions and hope that the meetings this week offer a path to a swift resolution of critical priority, rather than serve as another example of a failed-to-materialise assurance.
Further updates will be issued as appropriate.

Salford Red Devils placed under special measures due to financial concerns
The Reds have openly discussed their financial struggles throughout the year..
Salford Red Devils have been placed in special measures due to concerns relating to their financial sustainability, Rugby League Live understands. The decision is understood to have been made due to the Rugby Football League having reasonable cause for concern relating to the club.
Salford, who have made no secret of their delicate financial situation in recent months, have gone through a tough period in which they have sold three of their star players and shared concerns relating to their future as a result of ongoing issues relating to their stadium lease.
A club can be placed in special measures for a number of reasons. They include the request for loan or distribution advancements, a delay in supplying other clubs with shared gate match account and delays in settlement. The full list of reasons can be seen in the RFL operational rules by clicking here. www.rugby-league.com/flipbooks/2023-operational-rules-tiers-1-3/index.html#p=26
Super League set for major six again and play the ball rule changesAs a result of being placed in special measures, a club would need to receive permission from the RFL to enter into any new contracts with players and must provide further transparency regarding their financial position. Furthermore, the RFL has the power to create a Sustainability Cap for the club.
As per the Operational Rules, a Sustainability Cap "is the amount that it can budget to spend on items that would count towards the Salary Cap Qualifying Costs of its players to ensure that its Agreed Operating Budget shows a profit or breakeven position." Put simply, there will be a restriction on the amount of money Salford are able to spend on their playing budget until concerns relating to their finances ease.
When approached for comment, an RFL spokesperson said: โThe RFL has procedures in place for any clubs who may encounter financial problems from time to time, but these always remain confidential.โ

::: RFL Board approves Laws changes for 2024 :::
The following Laws amendments, recommended by the RFL Laws Committee, were approved by the RFL Board this week โ and will therefore be introduced for the 2024 season.
The Board also considered a separate paper on Concussive and Sub-Concussive Impacts, which have led to a number of recommendations from Laws Committee, the Clinical Advisory Group and the Brain Health Sub-Committee which will be announced in due course.
Laws Amendments, 2024
1 - Scrum Penalties
Teams awarded penalties from scrums may now take the option of resetting the scrum - whereas previously, that option was only available for early detachment. Laws Committee recommended the change to encourage attacking play from scrums โ by disincentivising deliberate concession of penalties. (The option of using the sin-bin for a repeat offence is seen as especially significant in this regard)
2 โ Restarting the tackle count (Six Again)
If a defensive team infringes within the 40-metre area of the team in possession, the referee will award a penalty, rather than restarting the tackle count. Laws Committee felt that some teams were deliberately conceding six-agains early in the tackle count to gain a tactical advantage.
As part of this, Match Officials will put particular emphasis on cleaning up the ruck area. Players, coaches and match officials have agreed to see greater sanction for flops, hands on the ball-by-ball carriers and to ensure that ball carriers regain their feet on the mark and make a genuine attempt to play the ball with the foot. Ahead of the season work will take place to improve these areas and in matches, match officials will be expected to sanction these infringements more firmly.
(Other exemptions remain โ professional fouls, repeat infringements, or where play has broken down)
3 โ 18th Player Interchange
The 18th Player which teams have named in their matchday squad for use in case of head injuries will now be more readily available. Whereas they could only previously be used when three players had failed Head Injury Assessments (HIAs), they will now be activated following two failed HIAs โ or when a player is deemed ineligible to return to the field by any injury (not only to the head) caused by serious foul play which has led to an opponent being dismissed or sent to the sin bin. This change has been endorsed by Head Coaches, the Laws Committee and the Clinical Advisory Group.
4 โ Reckless Endangerment
Following an increase in the 2023 season in the number of tackles that have caused serious lower limb injuries, the Laws Committee recommended a new category of Misconduct as part of the Dangerous Contact charge, defined as recklessly endangering the safety of another player by making reckless contact to the lower limb(s) of the ball carrier where they have not made a โcontrolledโ attempt to make a tackle.
This law will only be relevant where the tackler has made contact with the lower leg(s) of the ball carrier. For the avoidance of doubt first contact with the ball carrier could have been above the knee joint but in this situation the direction of the force from the tackler must have been toward the floor.
Indicators for this charge/law breach are the tackler:
Is off their feet at the point of contact with the ball carrier Failed to attempt to wrap their arms around the ball carrier as the tackle was made Made contact with the legs of the ball carrier on or below the knee Put their own head in front of the ball carrier In the opinion of the Referee, the player is not looking at the ball carrier when going into or on contact and approach to contact is out of control (e.g., eyes to floor)
5 โ Green Card
The Green Card will continue to be used in the circumstances described below, but only in the Betfred Super League (no longer in the Betfred Championship), and only to be shown to players on the defending team (it can no longer be shown to the ball-carrier).
It was introduced to reduce the time taken to deal with injured players on the field of play, without compromising player safety โ so if the referee has been requested by a physio or doctor to stop play because of a potentially serious injury to a defending player, and the player involved is not interchanged or taken off for a Head Injury Assessment (HIA), the player will be shown a Green Card requiring him to leave the field for two minutes of elapsed playing time. Also as previously, a Club may use one of their interchanges to allow the player to remain on the pitch.
RFL Laws Committee โ recommendations followed a meeting on November 1 attended by:
Chair โ Dr Dave Rotheram (RFL Chief On-Field Officer); Robert Hicks (RFL Chief Regulatory Officer); Dave Elliott (RFL Match Officials Senior Coach); Laura Fairbank (RFL Head of Medical); June Fairhurst (Sky Sports โ media representative); Prof Ben Jones (RFL Strategic Lead for Performance, Science and Research); Rhodri Jones (RL Commercial Managing Director); Andrea Murray (National Education Manager); Mike Ford (Oldham โ League One representative); Paul Cullen (Match Review Panel); Tony Sutton (RFL Chief Executive)
RFL Brain Health Sub-Committee โ list
