GBGB LOCAL INQUIRIES


MRS JULIE BLUNT – PERRY BARR STADIUM

At a local inquiry held by the Area
Stipendiary Steward on 23 March
2023, professional greyhound trainer
Mrs Julie Blunt had her explanation
accepted regarding the withdrawal
of the greyhound SAVANA HONDO
from its race on 20 December 2022.
An amount of vomit was discovered
in its race kennel prior to its race and
following a veterinary examination,
was withdrawn from its race by the
local stewards under rule 69A

The Disciplinary Committee of the GBGB was in attendance at a
meeting held on 21st March 2023.

Professional Trainer Mr John Lambe
was found in breach of rules 152(i),
174 (i)(b) and 217 of the GBGB Rules
of Racing in that on analysis by LGC
Health Sciences a urine sample taken
from the greyhound GO GO JO at
Perry Barr Stadium on 16th July 2022
was found to contain the substances
lidocaine and 3-hydroxylidocaine.
Mr John Lambe was in attendance by
computer link as were Meriel France,
Stipendiary Steward and Professor
Tim Morris, independent scientific
adviser. Dan Bradshaw from the
Perry Barr Racing Office attended
from the track alongside Mr Lambe.
On the 16 October 2022 a prerace sample was taken from GO
GO JO trained by Mr Lambe which
upon analysis by LGC identified
the presence of lidocaine and
3-hydroxylidocaine. GO GO JO was
competing in a graded race at Perry
Barr in which she finished 5th at
odds of 5/1. The greyhound’s form
at Perry Barr has been consistent
and there were no unusual betting
patterns on the race in question.
Professor Morris gave evidence
that lidocaine is a local anaesthetic
available as an injection, spray and
cream for veterinary use including
cats, dogs and horses. There are
a wide variety of preparations
containing lidocaine (including
Germoloids ointment) used for
treating people. 3- hydroxylidocaine
is a metabolite of lidocaine in dogs.
Lidocaine as a local anaesthetic
is a substance which by its nature
could affect the performance of
the greyhound or could prejudice
its wellbeing. Professor Morris
continued that a review of the
Treatment Book and other records
of Trainer Lambe (including the
application of Ostrich and Black
Seed oil creams) did not suggest
anything to explain the finding of
lidocaine and 3-hydroxylidocaine in
the sample taken from GO GO JO
but this could have arisen from a
number of potential sources namely
its use to reduce pain from an injury,
procedure or condition, from cross
contamination or from feed or as a
result of deliberate administration.
Professor Morris added that a
small amount of lidocaine applied
topically to an area of soreness in a
greyhound would be very effective in
reducing pain.
Mr Lambe stated that neither he
nor any veterinary surgeon had
administered lidocaine to GO GO
JO but admitted that he fed his
racing dogs Category 2 Animal
By Products meat (and would
continue to do so if the Committee
considered the positive sample not
to have resulted from the feeding of
Category 2 ABP meat!) He added
that at the relevant time he had used
Germoloids ointment without surgical
gloves when applying the cream
3 times a day and that he was not
careful to wash his hands after each
application. This despite apparently
using surgical gloves when he
applied ibuprofen gel to a sore back.
The Committee were concerned
with Mr Lambe’s declared intention
to continue to use Category 2
meat despite his awareness of
the Calendar notices warning that
this was high risk and were also
concerned that he apparently had no
receipts for the meat supplied. He
could not therefore be certain what
he was feeding his greyhounds. He
stated that he was unaware if his
meat supplier also supplied Category
3 meat, albeit at a higher price but
would now enquire.
The Committee concluded that they
could not be certain that there had
not been a deliberate administration
of lidocaine in this case. They were
however clear that Mr Lambe’s
care of his greyhounds had been
seriously deficient in terms both of
the feeding of Category 2 Animal
by Products meat to his racing
greyhounds and in his failure to
ensure that his use of a medication
containing lidocaine did not cause
through cross-contamination the
positive urine sample. On the balance
of probabilities the Committee
considered that the positive
sample had been caused by crosscontamination from Mr Lambe’s use
of Germoloids ointment and found Mr Lambe in breach of Rules 152(i)
174 (i)(b) and 217 of the GBGB Rules of Racing. Taking into account his
previous breaches Mr Lambe was severely reprimanded and fined £1000.
