RACING POST PRICEWISE - ROYAL ASCOT ANTE-POST..
SAGA @ 12/1 ROYAL HUNT CUP - WEDNESDAY JUNE 21st
BLUE FOR YOU @ 16/1 ROYAL HUNT CUP - WEDNESDAY JUNE 21st APPOLO ONE @ 25/1 WOKINGHAM STAKES - SATURDAY JUNE 24th
There will be an awful lot of talk about the draw in the run-up to the Royal Hunt Cup and Wokingham at Royal Ascot next week, but the statistics say it doesn't matter that much. Consequently, now is a good time to have a close look at both races because the market is relatively untouched, whereas come the day the sharks will have gobbled up the nice prices.
Starting with the Hunt Cup, I have long felt Saga could put racing on the front pages by scoring for the King and Queen, and if Frankie Dettori rides he could end up being one of the best-backed horses of the entire meeting.
Saga has been called a lot of names and I don't think Frankie will have his picture over his fireplace at home, but he should have won the Britannia last year and was also unfortunate not to win at Newmarket on Guineas weekend.
The form of the latter race is working out really well, and both those efforts point to Saga being the perfect type for the Hunt Cup as he loves coming off a strong pace.
In the same contest I am also expecting a big run from David O'Meara's Blue For You, another who doesn't win as often as he should but definitely has the talent to oblige in a race like this.
There simply isn't a yard in Britain with a better record in big-field handicaps over 7f or a mile than O'Meara's, and the Hunt Cup has been Blue For You's target all season. He won the valuable mile handicap at last year's Ebor meeting despite meeting traffic problems, while he found his path blocked once again in the Balmoral Handicap at Ascot on Champions Day. At least that run showed Blue For You was at home at Ascot and, like Saga, he won't mind what the ground is come the day.
Old boys Intellogent and Bless Him as well as the six-year-old Astro King all ran well in the race a year ago and will no doubt go well again, but they are surely susceptible to a younger horse who is on the up.
Orazio has been a revelation in his two victories since the turf season kicked off and has every right to be at the top of the Wokingham market. However, both those runs came on soft ground and he has shot up 11lb in the weights as well. The figures suggest he's a Group horse and he might still win, but given those concerns I would rather suggest Apollo One, who is officially 3lb well in after an excellent run at Epsom on Derby day.
Apollo One was drawn on the wide outside at Epsom and did a lot of running early in order to adopt a decent position. Furthermore, he didn't look at home on the track and yet he was rallying nicely at the winner come the line. That run strongly suggests the five-year-old is still improving, and he also ran a cracker in the Wokingham last year when too keen.
Hopefully, the always excellent Richard Kingscote will be on board again because Apollo One seems to settle for him and, with a more patient ride, I can see him faring an awful lot better than when eighth in the race 12 months ago.
Probe might have found the ground and track against him in that Epsom race. If there is some give in the ground he can leave that form well behind and be a danger to all.
