Patrick Janssens will be sending a talented team of dogs up to Nottingham for the PGR Eclipse


TRAINER Patrick Janssens may only have the brilliant Barntick Bear in racing action at Nottingham this week, but the in-form handler admits he is planning a big assault on the track’s forthcoming Premier Greyhound Racing Eclipse with a team that may yet include Saturday’s PGR Oaks favourite Druids Say Go.

“It’s a £20,000 competition at a top track and I’ll be sending a vanload for it,” said the trainer yesterday. “It’s definitely a track that can suit Barntick Bear. When he gets daylight he’s phenomenal, as he showed at Towcester last week when breaking the 500m clock.

“Venues like Nottingham and Hove can play to his strengths as he can lack that bit of early speed you need at other tracks. Six bends is not for him, you can’t be breaking four-bend track records and be a proper stayer really.”

Connections of Greyhound of the Year Droopys Clue excepted, few would disagree with the Belgium-born handler on that score, and a Nottingham campaign looks ideal for the brilliant son of Droopys Sydney-Barntick Smokey, particularly given how he left a massive calling card at the Colwick Park circuit on his sole previous competitive start there when an eyecatching second in August’s Select Stakes.

“He’ll be joined in the Eclipse by the likes of Slick Sentinel [trials 500m tonight], Droopys Doughnut and Romeo Command plus a few more who all run at Towcester on Sunday.

“Slick Sentinel really excites me. He could easily be our dog for 2025. He’s so fast but is so big, nudging 37 kilos, and still schooling himself. He will only get better.

“I am thinking about Druids Say Go as well for Nottingham, but that’s a conversation to be had and decision to be made after we get Saturday and the Oaks out of the way. But I think she’ll get the 500m at Nottingham now.”

The East Anglian Derby champion has won 12 of her last 13 races heading into tomorrow’s £20,000 Classic showdown at Perry Barr for which she trades as a best-priced 4-9 favourite after an unbeaten run through to the 480m final.

Janssens added: “She’s a bitch in form and obviously the one to beat. I was gutted that Queen Joni was injured last week in the other semi and texted Rab [McNair] straight away as I was looking forward to our bitch meeting her as much as anybody else

“Obviously Druids Say Go is a short price, but she’s in the prime of her life right now and if she comes away as she has been and is left alone to the first bend then she’ll win.

“But even without Joni it’s a strong final and will take some winning. But she’s handled some bad draws in traps four and five and now is closer to the rails in two.

“I can’t think of another greyhound who has been to Perry Barr and broken 28 seconds three times in a row in races.

“I rate her right up there with Coolavanny Shado, Thorn Falcon, Slick Sakina and Fabulous Azurra as one of the best I’ve trained.”

The Premier Greyhound Racing Eclipse closes to entries on Friday, November 8 and runs over three consecutive Monday nights, starting on November 11 and concluding with a £20,000 decider on November 25.
