Chris Black, Perry Barr's GM, presents the PGR Judgement Night trophy to Patrick Janssens
Janssens prevails after Judgement Night thriller BY JIM CREMIN OF THE RACING POSTA PHOTO-FINISH for third place in the last of the six scoring races proved the final act in Thursday’s exciting Premier Greyhound Racing Judgement Night at Perry Barr - where Kevin Hutton’s Forest Icon missed out by short-head to Richard Rees’ Burnchurch Mick, which meant Patrick Janssens had prevailed to take the £5,000 prize.
Third place would have handed Hutton a share of the spoils and, given he had been the 25-1 outsider beforehand, it was a tremendous effort by the team of the ‘big man’.
Shrewd playing of jokers to score double points had put Janssens (with Fabulous Azurra, bitches, 28.33sec), Hutton (Sleek By Design in the stayers, 40.04sec) and also defending champion Mark Wallis (Gougane Jet, 15.97sec in the sprint) all in contention come the final leg - with Matt Dartnall also a contender had Droopys Ambush won that carrying his joker with the other placings also falling his way.
Slick Saratoga (28.30sec) got Janssens, odds-on for the title, off to a great start in the puppy opener while his Hawfield Ozark’s second to John Mullins’ Signet Goofy (28.09sec) in that finale in the end proved enough.
Wallis found himself in a clear lead at half-way thanks to Saffrons Dash (28.36sec) making all in the maiden, then Gougane Jet’s ‘double bubble’ of 20 points.
It again showed that greyhound racing can produce thrilling team events in a way that seems to have eluded horseracing.
Perry Barr afterwards tweeted: “Huge congratulations to Patrick Janssens and all connections for winning the Premier Greyhound Judgement Night.”
Final scores: Patrick Janssens 46, Kevin Hutton 44, Mark Wallis 40, John Mullins 34, Matt Dartnall 27, Richard Rees 12
**The apparent ‘match race’ between Jimmy Fenwick’s Brookside Richie and Coolavanny Shado for Janssens in a supporting event produced an 8-1 turn-up as Paul Foster’s Goldies Perryman (28.46sec) snatched a short-head victory over Brookside Richie on the line.
Coolavanny Shado had started slowly, then got bumped at the bend.
