FAMILIES INVITED TO CELEBRATE NATIONAL GREYHOUND WEEK AT VALLEY STADIUM
~ Valley Stadium in Caerphilly offering free entry on Bank Holiday Sunday ~ ~Activities for children and families on offer at Wales’ only licensed greyhound racecourse~ Valley Greyhound Stadium will this year be hosting a Family Fun Day on Sunday 25th August as part of the Greyhound Board of Great Britain’s second annual National Greyhound Week (NGW), with opportunities to meet the much-loved greyhounds as well as those that work and support the sport.
The celebratory event at Valley Stadium will be free of charge to all, providing an opportunity for the wider community to enjoy a family day out and meet the much-loved greyhounds at the heart of the sport.
National Greyhound Week is a dedicated week in the calendar to celebrate Welsh and British greyhound racing. This year’s event will focus on celebrating the canine athletes and families at the heart of the sport, as well as showcasing local racecourses, including the Valley, as significant employers and economic contributors.
As well as meeting the greyhounds and having the opportunity to talk with those who care for them, the Stadium will also be hosting a number of exciting activities for children and providing refreshments available throughout the day. Stadium staff will also be on hand to discuss the opportunities for wider community development, and the potential for a new, local hub on site which could be used by local groups and charities.
It has been one year since Valley Stadium was granted a GBGB license and, under GBGB’s regulatory remit, there have been significant and transformative improvements at the track. These improvements have allowed the Valley to be preserved as a historical community touchstone, while ensuring the highest standards of greyhound welfare. As greyhound racing remains among the top ten most popular spectator sports in the country, the Stadium also acts as a strong social hub for local people of all ages.
Ahead of the event, GBGB Racing Operations Executive, Scott Harvey, said: “Following on from last year’s inaugural National Greyhound Week, NGW 2024 will again showcase what an exciting, accessible and affordable activity greyhound racing is for the whole family. We are thrilled that Wales now has its first licensed GBGB racecourse in Caerphilly, and we’re looking forward to celebrating National Greyhound Week in Wales for many years to come.”
Local Greyhound Ambassador Bob Boswell encouraged the community to get involved: “National Greyhound Week is the perfect opportunity to celebrate our greyhound family and I’d encourage anyone who can to come along to the Valley’s Family Fun Day. As well as showcasing the thrill of greyhound racing, this will also be an opportunity for the community to meet the greyhounds and see what great pets greyhounds can make after they retire from racing.”
