Animal rights protestors arrested at English Greyhound Derby in Northamptonshire fined a total of ยฃ60,000 In courtFour animal rights activists arrested for trying to disrupt a major sporting event at Towcester Racecourse have been handed fines totalling ยฃ60,000.
Alexandra Dunnet, aged 24, of Market Place, East Finchley, London, Edward Allnutt, aged 42, Sasha Joliffe, aged 46, and 21-year-old Joseph Moss, all of no fixed abode, were convicted for aggravated trespass.
Northampton Magistrates Court heard how the defendants, who were all linked to the Animal Rising protest group, had attempted to disrupt the English Greyhound Derby โ the premier UK greyhound racing event โ on July 1 last year.
Allnutt was further charged with going equipped to lock on, under Section 2 of the Public Order Act 2023, making his one of the first convictions of its type in UK legal history.
A large police operation was mounted to ensure the event went off without incident, but the protestors broke into the race circuit and attempted to storm the track.
Allnutt, Moss and Joliffe were each sentenced to nine weeks imprisonment, suspended for 12 months, with Dunnett handed a six-week suspended sentence.
All were ordered to carry out 100 hours of unpaid work and complete 20 days of a rehabilitation activity requirement.
But magistrates also ordered the four to pay compensation of ยฃ15,000 โ split between Northamptonshire Police and Towcester Racecourse โ in addition to costs of ยฃ850 each.
All four were made subject to a restraining order not to enter or attend any sporting activity involving greyhound racing anywhere in the UK.
Allnutt received no separate penalty for the offence of going equipped to lock on.
Chief Inspector Pete Basham, who led the policing of the protest, said: โWe are absolutely delighted with the sentences handed down by the court, in particular the very significant financial penalties imposed. They send out a clear message to people determined to disrupt perfectly legal events that their actions will not be tolerated and they risk heavy fines for breaking the law.
โNorthamptonshire Police mounted a significant, but proportionate public order operation to minimise disruption and as a result public safety was maintained throughout and the spectators were able to see all races completed as scheduled."

Janssens to slash kennel strength... Patrick Janssens is looking to half his kennel strength from around 20 runners to 10 as he admits to being disenchanted with the direction that the sport is taking.
The 2020 Champion Trainer said: โThere isnโt one thing in particular, there are lots of issues. There are only three of us here now and it makes it very difficult to enjoy what we are doing.
โTake the situation at Monmore with the PGR Puppy Derby. It was staged in the daytime which meant it was impossible for me to get away. I worked all day and watched the race on my phone. And that isnโt a dig at Monmore, they are a fabulous group of people at the stadium and couldnโt try harder to make you feel welcome.
โI miss the social side of things. Going racing in front of a big crowd, feeling the atmosphere. It was part of the enjoyment. Now you go racing, and whether it is daytime racing or not, there is no one there.
โI have the most fabulous bunch of owners in the kennel, the best ever. They want to keep bringing me new dogs, and I will do the best to accommodate them, but there will be more going out than coming in.โ

Andy Lisemore: Towcester RM has had his licence temporarily suspended
GBGB temporarily suspends licence of Towcester RM....BY PAUL BROWN OF THE RACING POST 18 APR 2024TOWCESTER racing manager Andy Lisemore has had his licence temporarily suspended by the GBGB.
A statement from the board yesterday said: โPursuant to Rule 160(vii), we can confirm that the licence of Mr Andrew Lisemore, Racing Manager at Towcester Racecourse, has been temporarily suspended.
"As regulator, we remain committed to ensuring that the Rules of Racing are upheld across our sport, and by all individuals within it, so that the highest standards of welfare and integrity are maintained.
โAn investigation is ongoing and both Mr Lisemore and the stadium have been notified. We are working closely with the track to support them in making the necessary adjustments ahead of todayโs race meeting.โ
The non-participation of Liz McNair's Derby ante-post favourite King Memphis in Sunday's Time Nutrition Juvenile appears to have brought matters to a head.
Her husband Rab withdrew the dog late in the day, apparently concerned at the way kennelling procedures were carried out.
Lisemore, who was not officiating, told the Racing Post on the day: โI spoke to Rab and he explained he wasnโt happy that some of the Juvenile runners took the opportunity to kennel later while his dog was here early as they had pre-meeting trials.
โWe donโt officially run a full second kennelling, but the option is there on a 14-race card if pre-arranged."
It is understood that the kennel block containing King Memphis - said to be a poor kenneller - was disturbed by the late addition of another greyhound.
A section of the the rule cited in the statement states ". . . having regard for the seriousness of the alleged matters, the circumstances justify the temporary suspension of a licence."
The GBGB had four sampling stewards on duty at Towcester on Tuesday, although senior stipendiary steward Duncan Gibson stated it was "just Towcester being the track selected by the [sampling] team on this occasion."
