Kevan Moretti: "External circumstances beyond our control have brought about this closure" Greyhound TV to cease operations at end of the monthBY PAUL BROWN 2:00PM MON 11 MAR 2024GREYHOUND TV is to cease broadcasting on March 31, bringing to a close more than 12 years of free-to-air live greyhound racing on what was a groundbreaking show for the industry.
The news was announced yesterday by Kevan Moretti, chairman and CEO of parent company SportyStuffTV, who founded the show in 2011.
"This brings to a close 12 years of service provided by the company to shareholders and viewers," said Moretti. "We would especially like to thank SportyStuffTV's production staff, presenters, guests, crew and suppliers for their continued support throughout.
"With inevitable sadness today, there is also much to be proud of and it is regrettable that external circumstances beyond our control have brought about this closure. 2023 was the companyβs most successful year of trading, so we leave now at the top of our game.β
The programme's first transmission, in partnership with the Racing Post as Racing Post Greyhound TV, was on December 9, 2011 on an initial three-nights-a-week schedule.
It brought together an unprecedented alliance of bookmakers in Ladbrokes, William Hill, Coral and bet365, plus leading betting exchange Betfair, as founding partners, to be subsequently joined by Betfred, Paddy Power and Unibet.
Speaking on the show's tenth anniversary in 2021, Moretti said: βA decade ago, few of us dreamed at our tentative, almost experimental, launch that RPGTV would have survived and prospered for an entire decade."
Speculation was rife at the start of this year that the programme would cease after the switch of the Entain tracks to Arena Racing Company for the joint-venture Premier Greyhound Racing service, while the partnership with the Racing Post also ended.
It is believed that there was a prospective buyout by SIS of the operation which foundered at the last minute.
The initial RPGTV line-up saw action from Henlow or Monmore plus Hove on Thursdays, Romford and Sunderland on Fridays and Crayford and Newcastle on Saturdays.
It expanded its coverage first to five nights a week and then seven, with morning action on Saturdays and all-day racing on Sundays. There were numerous schedule changes, with Kinsley the sole GBGB track currently operational not to have been shown.
Closed venues Belle Vue, Coventry, Peterborough, Poole, Shawfield and Wimbledon all featured for spells.
The final show will be an all-day affair on Easter Sunday.
