Perry Barr Trainer Kate Harrison happy Valley has brought out the best in Speed WHILE the dust was settling on a pulsating Derby first round and just a few hours before the 3 Steps showdown stole the headlines from Sheffield on Sunday afternoon, Perry Barr-based greyhound Different Speed was quietly making further waves of his own as he stretched his winning streak to 11 for trainer Kate Harrison.
Ten of that impressive 11-race spree have taken place at Welsh track Valley, with the October 21 son of Pestana-Fast Dolly taking to the 260m trip there like a duck to water, much to the delight of his 43-year-old handler, who only took out a full training licence in September last year.
Harrison said: “It’s been incredible how it’s come about really. He was a modest grader over the 480m at Monmore but sprinting has been the making of him. He loves going to the Valley, sleeps all the way there in the van and is excited when he arrives.
“He tends to run so wide off the second bend at Perry Barr, so I was in two minds about sending him to a tighter track, but it’s been ideal for him and he even traps better there.”
Harrison, whose early working days saw her doing voluntary work with animal charities, admitted she stumbled into greyhound racing when applying for a job in her local paper as an 18-year-old, which led her to the kennels of former Monmore trainer Stuart Buckland.
She said: “I didn’t even realise it was a racing kennel at first, but I got the job and was hooked in no time. I love the dogs themselves, always have, and worked with Stuart for over 20 years.”
A spell followed with Monmore-based Chris Fereday on Buckland’s retirement, before her former boss gave her a call to see if she wanted to take over his kennel after things didn’t work out for Jooles Slater.
“I’d not thought about being a trainer,” Harrison said. “And I only had a handful of dogs, but Stuart said I’d be fine. He was right, lots of people helped out by sending me a few dogs including Craig Marston [fellow trainer] – and it’s taken off in that sense, with 66 in the kennel at the moment.”
As for Different Speed, he came on board when Harrison advertised for a driver to help take runners to the track and his owner Dave Cartwright got in touch.
“Dave was able to do the driving, but also wanted his dogs to join the kennel. He brought 13 in, including Different Speed. We all know he’s no world beater, but we’ve done some work with him and put a couple of kilos of weight on him and he’s just a happy dog.
“We put him in the Scurry at Perry Barr with no real expectations, but he amazed us all by making the final. When the dogs are happy, they’ll run well for you and he’s the perfect example.
“We seem to have found the perfect track for him in Valley and he’s popular with the punters there. I’m a believer in keeping things simple and we’ll keep taking him back there while it makes him happy.”
