SALFORD have the stadium deal they wanted โ and hopes are rising they will get the money needed to make sure they are not victims of rugbyโs โnational crisis.โ
The cityโs council has voted through a ยฃ7 million buyout of current joint venture partners Peel โ putting a total value of ยฃ14 million on what is now the Salford Community Stadium - which would open up access to much-needed cash.
Salford City Council has is looking to seal a takeover of the Salford community Stadium that could help secure the Red Devils' future 2 Salford City Council has is looking to seal a takeover of the Salford community Stadium that could help secure the Red Devils' future But while city mayor Paul Dennett told SunSport he will do all he can to make sure the Red Devils - choked by red tape for the last year - pull through to avoid a โtragedy,โ the financial state of both codes is bigger than one authority.
He said: โBoth codes of rugby are really struggling. The Government put money into league just to keep the clubs and the sport alive.
โThereโs a national crisis in rugby at the moment. Salford City Council isnโt going to solve that on its own.
โSo we need to work with the likes of Sport England, the Rugby Football League and the Department of Culture, Media and Sport to properly come forward with a strategy to support rugby.
โIt would be tragic for the city of Salford to lose a 150-year-old institution. We need to do all we can to get behind the club. We can achieve great things working with this great club.
โItโs an institution that came out of the city of Salford for the city of Salford. Thatโs the sort of institution I believe in.
โWithout this club, we lose so much. You really canโt put a price on that positive social impact โ thatโs what weโre fighting for.
โAnd weโre going to have to try and support this club in whatever way we can, thereโs no doubt about it. We need to keep them alive.โ

Salford Red Devils swoop to sign David Nofoaluma on eve of Super League season The winger has penned a short-term deal with the club. Salford Red Devils have bolstered their squad on the eve of the season after securing a deal for winger David Nofoaluma. The 30-year-old has signed a one-year deal with the Super League club which will help the Reds fill the void left by the unexpected departures of Ken Sio and Joe Burgess.
Nofoaluma was a free agent after experiencing a controversial exit from Wests Tigers during the off-season. It brought to an end an impressive career with the NRL side, for whom he is their highest ever try-scorer after notching 100 tries in 192 games.
Salford were in position to swoop for the winger given they still had a quota spot at their disposal. It comes at a perfect time for the Reds, with new winger Ethan Ryan set to miss the opening rounds of the season with a wrist injury. That, coupled with the departures of Sio and Burgess, had left them lacking depth in the outside backs before the season had even started.
โI think for myself it a good move for me to get out Sydney and experience what itโs like over in Europe," he told the Daily Telegraph. "Iโm excited about it. I got a taste of a new club when I went down to Melbourne, so I know what itโs like to be in a new environment. Itโs a fresh start."
He is not expected to arrive for their Super League opener against Leeds Rhinos on Friday but will help ease selection issues for coach Paul Rowley in future rounds.
