Marc Sneyd was at his thrilling best as Salford Red Devils secured a huge victory over Hull KR.
Round 3 threw Paul Rowley’s side perhaps their toughest test so far; a Robins’ side who came into the contest with a 100% record.
A last minute change – as the team’s came back in from their warm-up – saw Chris Atkin replace the injured Ryan Brierley at fullback.
Kai Morgan was promoted to the interchange bench, making his Salford Red Devils and Betfred Super League debut.
Salford were straight on the front foot from the beginning. Marc Sneyd set the tone, forcing a string of repeat sets from his magical left boot.
A brilliant few carries opened up Rovers and Sneyd’s neat nudge allowed Deon Cross to dart through, touch the ball down and open the scoring.
KR tried to wrestle back momentum via a Mikey Lewis chipped kick, but Chris Hankinson was brave, and claimed the ball before being tackled in the air.
The visitors continued to probe and tried their luck again with a grubber in behind the Salford defence. Stand-in fullback, Atkin cleaned up very well and killed the Rovers attack dead.
A highlight throughout the contest, but particularly in the first forty, was Salford’s dogged goal line D.
Repeat set after repeat set had the Red Devils camped on their own line, but after showing excellent character, the ball was fumbled by Tyrone May.
It was quickly shifted downfield, and some powerful running allowed skipper, Kallum Watkins to open up KR on their own 10 metre line.
A quick play the ball and some instinctive play-making from Cade Cust allowed Chris Hankinson to dive over the right corner for his first try in Salford colours.
Sneyd, from an almost impossible angle, converted in style, extending Salford’s lead to 12 points.
Back for the second forty, ex-Red Devils’ winger, Joe Burgess fumbled the ball on his own goal line, with a further penalty allowing Sneyd to knock over a penalty-goal.
Another two was added by Sneyd shortly after when Lewis hit the halfback late.
Their was still time for a twist in this one, with Cross sent to the bin for Salford when he tried to interfere with Burgess’ quick tap on the 20.
With 12 men on the field, it wasn’t long before Peta Hiku was over in the corner, after selling Lafai a dummy on the right edge.
Rovers came back again for a second time, with Lewis dribbling the ball along the floor before being brought down by Joe Shorrocks.
The on-field call of penalty-try was overturned by the video referee, with multiple KR bodies offside from the original kick.
Hiku was also sent to the bin shortly after, this time giving Salford the man advantage with Cross back on the field.
Things got a bit more tense when Jez Litten scored for KR, but Sneyd – capping off a Man of the Match performance – sunk a drop-goal in front of the sticks to secure the victory for Salford.
Next up for Rowley’s men is a trip to face St Helens.[/tt] MATCH FACTS:

TAKEN FROM THE MANCHESTER EVENING NEWS MONDAY 4-3-24Salford council gave Red Devils £315,000 in 'immediate' financial supportCouncillors did not debate the decision because of it's 'urgent' natureSalford Red Devils have been given £315,000 from the council in "immediate" financial support.
The rugby league club, who play at Salford Community Stadium, said the money will help to secure its financial sustainability.
The funds were sent to Salford City Reds Limited on February 28 after a request from the club, which was put in special measures over its finances last year.
Salford Mayor Paul Dennett approved the decision to transfer the money last week in consultation with councillors Jack Youd and John Merry. It was treated as "urgent" and avoided being called to a scrutiny meeting where councillors could debate the decision.
The council recently decided to buy the Salford Community Stadium outright in what was seen as a major boost for the rugby league club and its future prospects.
A Salford council spokesperson said: “The full acquisition of the stadium is going through many stages of pre-scrutiny and decision making engagement along with financial and legal diligence. As we move towards the start of a new future for the community stadium and a sustainable financial plan for the club, we have agreed temporary, reasonable and proportionate financial support of £315,000 in line with the Subsidy Control Act.
“This will support the club to get on a firm footing as we move to the next stage. Salford City Council continues to recognise the value of Salford Red Devils to the city and local community and the importance of the club continuing to play in Salford."
Leader of Salford Conservatives, Councillor Robin Garrido, said the decision was made without his input and could end up hurting Salford residents with higher council tax.
He said: "This is not the first time it's happened, over the last few years we've had urgent requests for money because they'd run out. This is the club that will be paying rent on the stadium, if they can't even afford to run the club how can we justify buying it without sufficient income?
"The whole thing doesn't stand up."
Mr Garrido added that the club was given £170,000 last year which has not yet been repaid.
He raised concerns about the decision being made without being scrutinised by councillors.
He said: "We were not able to give our view on it, we're being gagged. We're the official opposition on the council but we can't comment properly on something that significant.
"How can they find that sort of money at the drop of a hat, we're not talking about £10 here. We can't keep on with this, that stadium is going to cost taxpayers every year."
Salford Red Devils rejected claims that they can't pay their own way.
A club spokesperson said: "On this occasion, we have received financial support from the local authority to secure the financial sustainability of the club – and one reason we have received this is due to unnecessary delay and obstruction from the current opposition which has set the budgeted timeline back.
"To challenge the perpetual false narrative that the club seemingly does not pay its way, we would also like to be clear that the club have paid and continue to pay rent on a monthly basis that is higher than any amount paid by any of the club’s previous ownership since moving into the Salford Community Stadium."
The club said it has tens of thousands of people coming through the turnstiles each year.
It added that as part of the lease to play at Salford Community Stadium, it pays eight percent of its ticketing revenue, and has not made "a penny" from in-stadia food and drinks sales during its tenancy.
Salford Mayor Paul Dennett said: "Salford Red Devils are rightly acknowledged in the council's Statement of Strategic Intent for the acquisition of the Salford Community Stadium as a 150-year-old institution in our city, a significant cultural contributor, and we expect them to be a key part of our planned city-wide Rugby Strategy.
"By providing this temporary financial support, we are securing the future of rugby league within Salford, as well as ensuring the successful delivery of the regeneration and social value benefits due from the council’s purchase of Salford Community Stadium, finally delivering on the visions first articulated 14 years ago.
"The Conservative Party nationally has recognised the importance of securing the future of Rugby League in this county, with the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport providing an emergency support of £16 million to the Rugby Football League during the Covid-19 pandemic.
"It’s disappointing that Councillor Garrido does not share this enthusiasm for supporting rugby within our Salford."

SALFORD RED DEVILS RESERVES SQUAD NAMED FOR 2024....Head Coach, Stuart Wilkinson has named his Reserves squad for the 2024 season.
After a year of progression, a fresh-looking group will kick-off their league campaign with a tough trip to St Helens on Saturday afternoon.
Amongst the list are familiar faces like Alex Davidson, Charlie Glover and Finley Yates, while Leunbou Bardyel Wells has joined the club on a permanent basis after his impressive loan stint at the end of 2023.
With some eye-catching performances across last season, a lot of players have moved on in search of regular first-grade game time; including Jack Stevens at Swinton Lions and Matty Rudd at Rochdale Hornets.
Discussing his squad for the new campaign, Head Coach, Stuart Wilkinson has said: “After losing 20 players from last season – not forgetting the 14 that moved on the season before to Championship & League 1 clubs – we are finally at a good number.
“These include a number of players that have chosen to join Salford because of the reputation we’ve developed for helping players progress into good professionals.
“It is rewarding to see a couple of lads getting a chance to training with the first team squad (Nathan & Jamie) along with Josh Rourke signing for London.
“Our only hope is that we continue to provide similar opportunities with this current bunch.”
If supporters wish to attend this weekend’s game, it will be taking place at Thatto Heath, with kick-off scheduled for 6pm.
