Inside holds sway but Twilight stumbles out
INSIDE boxes ended up dominating the ECC Timber Oaks second round at rain-soaked Belle Vue on Friday, all four winners came from trap one, and only one middle seed, Patjennaholly, survives in Monday's draw for the semi-finals on Friday.
However, Forest Twilight, who had been joint ante-post favourite, stumbled at the traps and ended up going out of the event – despite gallantly recovering and getting herself back into contention down the back in the second quarter-final
Hayley Keightley’s star of the Lowther, who was bidding for 11 wins in a row, then weakened on the run for home as lack of peak fitness post-season told.
Alma Chic, a finalist last year, had kicked clear on the rails (28.69sec, track seemed to be slowing down) and then got chased home in the end by Patjennaholly and Newinn This Way.
There was a tremendous battle in the opener between Kim Billingham’s Chaotic Lynda (28.54sec) and Elaine Parker’s Swift Champagne, with the draw proving decisive for the Monmore raider in trap one. Bromwich Sue, last year’s Oaks runner-up, went through in third.
The draw in red proved equally helpful for Aero Babooshka in the third quarter-final, which produced a 1-2-3 for Mark Wallis (and a double on the night). She edged ahead as the field arrived together at the bend, Domino Storm and Evanta Evita then safely qualifying too.
The fourth second round heat was won by Charlie Lister's Tyrur Caroline (28.61sec), who raced clear early from trap one, with Roxholme Hottie and Fabulous Expert following her home.
Earlier the ECC Timber Laurels started and Tyrur Supermac looked the part for Lister when blasting clear in heat four, making all in 28.31sec as he romped home over seven lengths clear of the staying on Allowdale Blue.
Lister was initiating a treble on the night, which then included Stay Loose (28.37sec), the Gymcrack winner, who flew out from trap four, getting across to the rails to crowd up his kennelmate Bigmans Kid, who then tired. On Alert plugged for second after a slow start on what, at that stage, seemed a good night for the Keightley camp.
Earlier their Roxholme Barkley was soon clear in heat one (fastest 28.27sec). Keightley’s Trafalgar hero showed excellent early while Irish raider Hillcroft Hero looked as though he would be the better for the run, plugging on for second, beaten over four lengths.
The winner's litter brother Roxholme Scolari (28.34sec) completed a double for Keightley in heat three, cutting in from trap five, but his pace took him to the front at the bend after Slade Paddy had led up before going very wide.
Johns Present turned second here, and was beaten nearly three lengths. The race was delayed and reduced to five runners after the vet intervened and withdrew Myway Mars for a rules breach.
Millwards Whitey earlier popped out and made all (28.31sec) for Dean Childs in heat two, where the field bunched behind at the turn, with Coolavanny Rebel emerging clear second, beaten over five lengths.
There had been little to choose between the winning times although the final heat was slow-run. 16-1 outright Pricewise pick Blue Moment made no mistake in heat six, though was made to work by Taranis Bolt who, after a slow start, got into contention down the back and led briefly at the third turn. Wallis's Blue Moment, who had led up, then rallied and drew clear again in 28.66sec (time irrelevant). Droopys Novak was third here.
Both events continue on Friday (live on RPGTV), the draws are Monday. The live on Sky finals are Wednesday week.

TAKEN FROM THE GREYHOUND STAR WEBSITEgreyhoundstar.co.uk/brayshaw-wont-be-drawn/Brayshaw won’t be drawnIf Saturday’s ECC Timer Laurels and Oaks qualifiers had been held on different nights, the Belle Vue track staff would probably be criticised for their preparations. Four of the six Laurels heats went to trap four, followed by all four Oaks heats going to the ladies in red. Racing manager Dave Brayshaw said: “It is just the way it worked out. The six Laurels heat winners were all very dominant. Five of the six heats were won emphatically and were covered by 10 spots, with no winners from trap one. “The four Oaks winners went to trap one, but were much tighter. For example, Chaotic Lynda (T1) had Swift Champagne (T2) on her outside for most the race, and the result might have gone the other way if you had reversed the traps. “But the draw has become more complicated with 12 railers through to the semi finals with Tyrur Caroline, who impressed me greatly, now in trap five, and Chaotic Linda in six. “The situation is hardly any better in the Laurels with one wide seed among the 18 runners. “I don’t know why there is such an imbalance. It happens in graded racing too, but mainly in the higher grades. There are more wides and middle seeds among the slower dogs. “I was very impressed with Tyrur Supermac, Millwards Whitey and the two Roxholmes in the Laurels heats, but the competition looks wide open to me. As for the Oaks, it is entirely complicated by the draw. The one thing I have noticed is that railers drawn in the middle traps tend to break quicker here. What effect that will have remains to be seen.” TAKEN FROM THE RACING POST - FRIDAY 4/12/15
